These incidents would likely all have been avoided entirely had even the most table stakes level of care gone into setting up the sandbox environments and instrumenting what was going in and out of them, so it's quite possible Anthropic people have just been...doing some things right.

Teachers parking in the No Standing zones intended for bus loading is one of those things most people will dismiss as a minor perk for people with tough jobs, but actually causes huge street dysfunction. You can see it billow out for blocks all around as busses double park and create gridlock.

I think the stations will usually tell you you’ll fail before even starting the inspection. At least that’s what happened when I bought a used car from out of state that came with tints. The owner of the tint shop I had remove them said his clients have been having more trouble passing recently.

I think some of the tint shops have deals where they’ll take it off and put it right back on after inspection. There used to be a lot of wink-and-nod re tints at the inspection stations, but my understanding is they’ve changed things such that it’s much harder to find a mechanic willing to risk it.

There are few things I dislike more than news helicopters in this city. Waking up with the windows open on a beautiful quiet morning and having to listen to two or three of them overhead for an hour while they film a big traffic jam on the BQE absolutely drives me up the wall.

Yeah, plenty of aggressive drivers in Italy, but they’re at least paying attention. The Autostrada is IMO more predictable than most US highways. Design matters too, e.g. the American style 4-lane stroad with red lights instead of roundabouts, which is dangerous and doesn’t really exist in Italy.

Never mind the ridiculous size of the average vehicle, and the huge lift kits, light bars, tinted windshields, and completely-falling-apart cars you see on the road every day, all of which contribute to unsafe roads in their own ways.

This is palpable if you spend time driving in both the US and Europe. Driving in the US is much more chaotic and stressful. A small % of drivers in the US are pathological and shouldn’t be allowed to drive, but are anyway. A bigger % are on their phones while driving, which is barely enforced.

This is likely just effort at compliance with broadly-written laws, where, e.g. offering existing members a discounted renewal rate can be construed as an algorithm that uses personal data. I expect we'll see this everywhere over time, like chemicals known to California and cookie-consent popups.

Some of this is an effect of fuel economy classification rules. Under CAFE, small efficient SUVs with the right attributes can be classified in the same bucket as popular, high margin inefficient pickup trucks, so manufacturers have had a big incentive to sell lots of crossovers instead of wagons.

A rural property I've regularly passed on my runs over the years has always had a large assortment of conservative signs and flags out front, centered on a big "TRUMP {next election year}" flag. I ran past just recently, and all of the miscellany was still there, but the Trump flag was gone.

Yeah, I think it winds up contributing to an overall shared sense that line drying clothes is something possible/normal, though. The tiny washing machines also help—way easier to hang dry a load from one of those vs a typical American machine.

In places with lots of balconies I think it's pretty common to have low folding racks on the balcony you won't necessarily see from the street.

Sure that's a common thing to have across Europe, but apartment buildings with laundry hanging outside are common pretty much everywhere, weather allowing, and something you never see in the US. Moldova doesn't seem to be an exception, these buildings I found at random have clotheslines built-in.

I think clothes dryers are a culprit here. Line drying being stigmatized as a poor person thing and actually banned in a lot of the US makes having a washing machine alone like in Europe less useful, and the energy use + venting requirements of dryers make them more complicated/expensive amenities.

15 years in NYC and one thing I have not gotten used to is the widespread practice of double parking in the middle of a busy street (and/or crosswalk, sometimes sidewalk) for an hour or more while attending church. Just ridiculous. Almost too on the nose, honestly.

There‘s a tipping point aspect to this—in the US with 90%+ trips by car, the govt can get away with sort of pretending people who don’t/can’t use a car don’t exist. Below a certain threshold of driving, though, there have to be real functional alternatives, which is what creates that perception.

It seems like the granite blocks are showing up more often, which I appreciate if we can’t have actual bollards. They used them right out of the gate with the Court St redesign in Brooklyn, whereas over on 4th Ave there are cars parked right on top of the flex posts on basically every block.

New phone for the first time in years and it is WILD that presumably whole teams of people decided that, when you’re playing audio, there should be this little dancing waveform visualizer animation at the top of the screen that can be hidden but never permanently disabled. Apple is off the rails.

Plenty of total nonsense and dubious uses for AI out there, but I think if we can actually turn energy into a tangible reduction in cybercrime by patching tons of bugs in critical software that were already just sitting there unnoticed, that is a huge win.

Insecure software existed & was constantly being hacked well before AI. It’s a cat and mouse game between developers and hackers. In this case it seems AI is able to make software that billions of people already use every day more secure against attacks from actual humans.

The device you’re using right now is running software that is full of security holes that nobody has found yet. Bad people are constantly looking for those holes to exploit and harm people. This technology is finding those holes faster than humans can, and fixing them before they can be exploited.

The NYT says today’s #NoKings protests had “no shortage of skeptics,” and then quoted exactly one of those skeptics: The chairman of the Ole Miss College Republicans (as of 2025.) But of course, the Times doesn’t ID him as such. He’s just a Concerned Youth.

The marches had no shortage of skeptics.
In Oxford, Miss,, Cass Rutledge, a first-year law student at the University of Mississippi, walked through the No Kings protest and around the town square on Saturday and questioned why people thought Mr. Trump was acting like a king.
"He is, you know, a duly elected president who won the popular vote and the electoral college in a landslide," Mr. Rutledge said.
"And so I'm a little bit confused on how he's acting differently than any other president."
He pointed to the stalemate in Congress over the SAVE America Act, the Republican-driven bill to tighten voter identification and registration rules, which Democrats have called an attempt to suppress turnout based on false claims of voting fraud. Mr. Rutledge said that Mr.
Trump was "going through the process" to try to get the legislation passed.
