Excellent! The crumble looks fab. Our apple crop was poor this year with the drought. And as we’ve recently sold up our rural place & temporarily moved into a small flat in London, I guess we’ll anyway have to buy fruit for winter puds. Enjoy the sweet chewiness! Delicious 😋

Friday was the hottest day *ever recorded* for Earth's oceans, on average. Oceans continue to absorb more than 90% of the excess heat from global warming: www.sfchronicle.com/climate/arti... via @sfchronicle.com

Earth’s oceans just broke a heat record. The implications will be massive
Human-caused global warming and a strong El Niño are adding excess heat to the oceans, threatening marine life and providing storms with more energy and moisture.

Fascinating to commemorate where the community lived, not only the place of death. It looks stunning; I'd love to visit. I worked hard to locate records of life when researching my family history - a reaction to the fact that what was (relatively) readily available were records of death.
Documents from my father’s years at the university of Breslau enabled me to locate further information about his time there. The K-C fraternity book assisted my search for people whose names I found in my father’s correspondence.

I wonder if you’ve got a wasp nest or similar in the vicinity. I don’t know enough about your climate, but at this time of year in the UK, wasps are at their most aggressive as specific food sources start to disappear. Can be a particular problem if you have fruit trees near by. Hope all is ok.

Agree that wasps or bees seem most likely, given the location of the reaction. Poor pups - and their people.

Orphaned Holocaust Survivors on Their Way to a Foreign Land | Arolsen Archives
When World War II came to an end, hundreds of thousands of young Holocaust survivors were left wandering through the ruins of war-torn Germany and Europe. The United Nations set up a special tracing service for children, tasked with reuniting missing or unaccompanied children with members of their families. The biggest group sent to Australia on the notorious Dunera voyage were refugees from Kitchener camp. They had largely been welcomed by the residents of Sandwich - many made good friends there, who helped the men learn English, and took them into their homes for meals. How we have fallen.

My dad was one of those refugee fighting-age men 👇🏻 Terrifying. Anyway - he enlisted as soon as the refugees were allowed to do so in autumn 1939, was sent to France in January 1940, and served in the British army for the remainder of the war

On a far more mundane level, my dad’s file was closed until something like 2045. Many many years after he’d died. And he was in the Royal Pioneer Corps and then the RAMC. Not exactly top secret stuff… The NA opened it when I asked, but 🤷🏻‍♀️

This country used to know how to deal with fascists interfering with the peaceful operation of Dover...
Photograph of British servicemen in full panto drag, manning (or possibly daming) a naval gun overlooking the Channel. I'm pretty sure this was taken for propaganda purposes rather than a genuinely spontaneous event - the idea that normal, sometimes silly, life was going on despite (and *to spite*) the Nazis was an important message on the home front.
