Off to see this exhibition👇🏻 My g-uncle Kurt Bloch & family were forcibly moved from their home in Mysłowice to Krenau ghetto, where they worked as slave labourers We have letters from Kurt describing conditions in winter 1942, and slave labour lists. Krenau was described as ‘Judenrein’ in Feb 43

Fascinating to commemorate where the community lived, not only the place of death. It looks stunning; I'd love to visit. I worked hard to locate records of life when researching my family history - a reaction to the fact that what was (relatively) readily available were records of death.
Documents from my father’s years at the university of Breslau enabled me to locate further information about his time there. The K-C fraternity book assisted my search for people whose names I found in my father’s correspondence.

My dad was one of those refugee fighting-age men 👇🏻 Terrifying. Anyway - he enlisted as soon as the refugees were allowed to do so in autumn 1939, was sent to France in January 1940, and served in the British army for the remainder of the war

The biggest group sent to Australia on the notorious Dunera voyage were refugees from Kitchener camp. They had largely been welcomed by the residents of Sandwich - many made good friends there, who helped the men learn English, and took them into their homes for meals. How we have fallen.

Good mooooorning Bluesky! We have rain. We have some greening of the grass. We have drenched, bedraggled baby squirrels that don’t know what’s going on or how to stay dry. Things are … kind of normalising.

If the bat doesn’t then fly off, it needs specialist medical help. Contact your local bat group and they will provide. It’s illegal to capture and keep a bat, and you need to know what you’re doing to rehydrate and feed - so get in the experts every time 🦇 www.bats.org.uk/advice/bats-...

@hesselmann.bsky.social Fascinating - thank you When she complained she wasn’t getting letters from London 👇🏻 - do you know if any were being sent? I’ve seen similar complaints in family letters & often wonder if the refugees were not writing or if letters weren’t arriving in 🇩🇪 during the war.

… Ruth and Ilse, specifically - we only know their names didn’t appear postwar in survivor lists, and my father’s searches in @arolsenarchives.bsky.social revealed no clues.

Apparently it’s #InternationalCaturday So here’s our elderly Bear rescue 🐈‍⬛ being stretchy & comfy on one of his many comfy places. As they get older, as with dogs, & as with people, cats need quiet warm comfy places, & little-and-often small amounts of favourite foods & water. A simple life.
Black Cat on a wool rug, next to his cat cave, which is on vet bedding, with more vet bedding inside.

Out of sight are various other comfy beds for when he needs to be comfy in a different light, or a different temperature.

Bear came to us as a rescue - so we’re not sure how old he is, but he’s been with us for 17 years. He’s never quite lost the stray crankiness, and isn’t a cuddly cat. He doesn’t like to be stroked. But he likes to sit on a knee of an evening, and likes to bump into legs, or a hand put down on the ground. It’s how he says hello. He has the zoomies down to an art form. And is incredibly chatty.

These days he’s an indoor cat mostly - by his choice.

He just does his thing.

Poor things - trying to find something green is making browse lines increasingly high. We’ve noticed this round our way as well. Our garden resident muntjac is going for the many many windfalls instead, clever girl.

Downsizing is not all about which books to still keep, but which programmes - and the memories they represent. I saw this production a few years after my dad died, but he loved the movie and we’d watched it together as a family several times on TV.

Downsizing - and some of the trickiest decisions about what to still hold onto are the programmes of things we’ve seen and listened to. So many of the people I went with for these outings are no longer with us - so I’m not sure what I’m holding onto or why, in some cases. Sigh. Not sure…

#FoodSky Prepping summer slaw👇🏻 yet it’s only weeks til I’ll be making what my mother called Nurse McGinty’s. Anyone else make this? Melt butter & black pepper in the bottom of a heavy pan; add grated carrot & swede; pop the lid on; shake it periodically = melting soft buttery winter veggies 😋

To make folk feel better in this deadly heatwave, QRP with your cold winter snowy art or photo! ❄️ (All very Peter Sellers, The Smallest Show on Earth)
A field at our old farmhouse in winter. Grassland covered in snow in the foreground; trees behind. Winter’s low sunlight

The land had been quarried by previous owners and wrecked. We spent 20 years draining and planting different areas for different types of wildlife. This would have been about halfway through the project.
I loved that place and all the thousands of creatures that found a home there.
