Universities are also massive local employers. Shut departments, reduce student numbers, you not only affect local businesses but many university staff (not just lecturers) are out of work. Fewer universities, more of all ages on benefits. Incredibly short-sighted 😢

I work in financial services. It's often held together by a few people who have been with the business for 30 years and know all the little fixes and how they work. They are generally lower grades and then made redundant. No-one in senior management understands that a junior has value.

There are few conditions our existing medical model fits better than ADHD. History, examination, patient education, pills. I will grant you that scaling up autism diagnosis and services will be trickier. But if we sorted ADHD right now, we‘d be more ready to develop a workable plan for autism

Diagnosis of ADHD really doesn’t need to be expensive. Developing efficient pathways for low cost, high-benefit, large-volume single-episode care for historically neglected conditions is meant to be a priority. We’ve massively expanded cataract surgery, diabetes courses and hearing aid provision.

UK water companies made £340m by pouring billions of litres of industrial/commercial wastewater into sewage treatment works. Treatment works are not designed to remove most chemicals, leaving pollutants to pass into rivers, seas and farmland. Investment neglected. Practices are mostly unregulated.

'It's over diagnosed' is a convenient excuse for doing fuck all about the 4yrs+ waiting lists for NHS diagnosis and pulling all the funding for the (much faster) Right to Choose providers. Meanwhile, children's lives, mental health, education, grades and future opportunities are being impacted.

5/5 "GenAI" (search, writing, art, movies) has no moral or practical use cases. The kind of AI which is useful (such as that which analyzes aerial photos for signs of hidden archaological sites) is not the type people invest billions in and are focing upon us.

NHS Productivity Lack of beds & infrastructure is the problem I have a standard kitchen in my house and can cook for 20. (Just) I ask another 2 people to cook with me but don’t increase the number of ovens or hobs. We get in each other’s way and can now only cook for 15🤷🏻‍♂️
