Well worth a read, if only to increase a sense of dread about where British politics is heading particularly given the way in which social media monetising outrage

There was a report of a rape in April. Police said the man arrested wasn't living there and was unconnected to the Wethersfield base. But there were plenty of reports to the contrary on social media, posted by the "auditors" who present Braintree as a new frontline stalked by fear. In an era where far more people get their news from social media than any newspaper, this matters.

Goading asylum seekers and turning it into a show is now social-media showbusiness, with serious money.

The biggest channel, Auditing Britain, has 200 million views on YouTube built over 16 years filming police stations and, lately, small-boat arrivals. Paying members watch each film before the public does, so spectacle pays. Beneath every video sit Amazon links to the kit: spy camera glasses, phone grip, "identification letters". It could all be worth as much as £250,000 a year. The latest act on the "auditor" scene is Danny Tommo and his masked men.

They film themselves challenging boat landings and blocking coaches carrying asylum seekers.

For such spectacles, members pay £8.99 a month.

His livestreams from Dover and Portsmouth have been watched more than a million times. The protest is the product.
