The logical fallacy that underpins Suella's, and apparently now Hannan's, view is that Britishness is a social construct but Englishness isn't. There is no English ethnicity. It simply does not exist. There is a shared history, culture and language - absolutely. That is not the same thing.

A huge problem with talking about the relationship between Russia and Eastern Europe is that to someone who quite rationally thinks spending energy on overt cultural assimilation is a waste of time an accurate recounting of their acts sounds unrealistically evil and they think we're lying.

Agreed - and I say this as a committed YIMBY. Not all of those who oppose housing do so on spurious and unfounded premises (though many do). There are genuine trade offs and impacts that need to be offset through community & in-kind contributions. Schools, roads and infrastructure chief among them.

Part of this is we had our adjustment earlier thanks to Liz truss, but a lot of it is that the Uk is one of the only countries where the politics of fixing the deficit seems tractable. Both because we can just raise taxes and because the politics is not so frozen.

I am a white, straight, middle class English (with Scottish roots) man. I have no idea what it is like to be from a minority. But I cannot get my head round someone like Suella, who in many ways in the case study (positive) for a well integrated and multicultural society, reaches this position.

Reminds of the Freakonomics-flagged Feldman's study of an honor system in offices, selling bagels in an honesty box. More senior / executive floors often had lower payment rates - though office size & moral also mattered. It's not that they can't pay, they feel entitled not to.

As a Brit I'm a little outside of this case but the details I have seen are horrific and my heart goes out to the victim. More broadly - every woman in my life has been made to feel uncomfortable by sexualised comments, multiple have been assaulted, several raped. We as men have to change.
