After the Summer

Seven weeks now
since you drifted out
from shore

much love, much missed

you watched your life
from the safe distance
of the sea

all the vibrancy, all the noise,

summer lilts in velvet nights
scorching silk days

so elegant and temporary
this lust for life

a memory of you

falling with leaves.

Submissions open in just one week, 21 August, for Issue 8 Fear. As before, we’re pairing the theme with our inherent focus: the gritty, the mundane, the uncomfortable, the human. Fear is universal, but the way we live with it is personal. So tell us, what do you fear?
Explore the fear of losing control of your own body
What is a fear you have grown out of?
The fear that happiness won’t last
Fear as controlThe fear of the abused become the abuser
Existential fears; the fear of being stuck in the same cycle
Fear of the unknown
How fear arises from traumaWhat childhood fears followed you into adulthood?
What is the first fear you remember?
Explore a fear passed down through generations
An everyday fear people have but don’t discuss

A new Broken Spine workshop is in development. The Poetry of Cultural Debris will explore how mixtapes, cinema tickets, obsolete technology, childhood toys, half-remembered sitcoms & other pop-cultural remnants can become poems of memory, identity & private mythology. More soon.
Landscape promotional graphic reading, “The Poetry of Cultural Debris: A Writing Workshop with Alan Parry.” A distressed, screenprinted collage combines football, music, comedy, wrestling, horror, retro gaming and writing imagery, including a cassette, vinyl record, piano keys, microphone, wrestling ring, championship belt, arcade joystick, television, typewriter and manuscript. The Broken Spine logo appears in the upper-right corner.
