Journal fees for open access are becoming obscene. But what are we, scientists, paying for? I made a simple plot with journals in my research area(s). Clearly, we are paying for prestige: a shockingly clean correlation between the impact factor and journal fees
A plot showing prestige (impact factor) on vertical axis and fees charged by journals on horizontal axis.

After asking the government (or private foundations) to pay for the costs of doing research, we conduct the research and write papers about it that our peers review for free, then we donate those papers to for-profit companies that sell them back to us at high prices. This is considered normal.

Great thread about preprints! I'll also add that just because journals request that your submission has double spacing and figures at the end, doesn't mean your preprint needs to be ugly. Spend a few minutes to make your preprint compact and readable with smaller line spacing and inline figures.

New preprint! How often do editors/reviewers actually compare preregistrations to the reporting in the article? Almost never. This figure sums up all of the results. Not good.
A two-panel figure showing the rate at which editors/reviewers mention the preregistration in their reviews, indicate accessing the prereg, and directly compare the prereg to the paper. The left panel is at the article-level and shows percentages of 43, 14, and 10, respectively. The right panel is the editor/reviewer level and shows percentages of 18, 5, and 3, respectively. These are very low levels.
