Any open science folks in my network who'd be willing to give my CV a little look through and provide some feedback? Back on the job market (currently 1/2 way through some mat cover) and the job market is horrendous.

Confused about the PRC model? I think it's best viewed as almost entirely about preprint/non-traditional peer review services and building a model to support those. It's not about preprints or meaningful change. youtu.be/VPNpkeV_EFQ?...

I'd love so much more of this brilliant kind of experimentation & evidence driven approaches. Sadly I fear the space is largely abandoning this, primarily driven by a small number who don't seem to want real change but to advance themselves

I've definitely moved more into critical metascience and it is not making me friends. Some in the open science space really do not want their views or behaviour challenging. This is how we do better folks! The space needs less group think, more diverse voices and more introspection.

Sad to see the poor methodology used here. The authors use an outdated list, ignoring more recent lists. We need to stop prioritising organisations due to their historical activity. This is normally a good group, so I'd have expected better. www.scholcommlab.ca/2026/09/01/d...

The really sad thing here is that there are people who think this means the 8.8% really were somehow better than those that just missed out. People who think a lottery would be unfair because this 👇 apparently works. I'd suggest most funding schemes should have a cut off and then lottery.

If only those behind this alliance adhered to that behaviour..... As a result of my experience with those behind this I can never support it, issues with the model aside. There's active ignorance of evidence. Refusal to engage with genuine concerns. And so much worse.

I get particularly irked by the open science roles that fail to share salary levels - not very transparent and we absolutely need to embody what we're asking of others in every aspect.

IMO we should therefore resist the temptation to be prescriptive and standardize workflows (yes of course standards for metadata, DOIs, etc.) and think of decoupled review and curation as an opportunity for diversity and experimentation 5/n

I've long supported preprint peer review and experimenting with those approaches but I've also been a loud critic of the PRC model. This is one of the reasons I'm concerned about the model 👇 but I have other concerns.

More evidence against the PRC model: "preprints have become intentional, legitimate objects of citation, independent of their later publication status, with non-curated preprints cited at rates comparable to curated ones" arxiv.org/abs/2607.25220

Preprints Without Curation Are Increasingly Cited by Journals
The recent strain on peer review systems necessitates the publish-review-curate model, where the public dissemination of manuscripts is decoupled from formal peer review and later editorial processes....

To me this is the big danger with getting preprint infrastructure wrong. There's a bunch of reasons people post preprints but a key reason is wanting change. When we replicate what we have we are just as bad as what were trying to fix.

It is outstanding how far *some* people will go to not cite my work simply because they've taken a personal dislike to me.... The open science space has a bug professionalism issue that people don't seem to want to talk about.

Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
The other thing to add here is to ask what trust actually looks like? One issue with PRC is it keeps that trust as peer review, which doesn't seem at all sensible. Indeed, I'm writing an article on why publishers should adopt the model it's it's so scarily compelling

Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
This is a massive problem that is rapidly getting worse (I wrote about it here: share.google/cW95J6t4MRCz...). The issue largely is that a minority are consolidating control and power within the space. This allows them to force their own agendas through, unchecked and unchallenged.

PRC is the most damaging effort we've embarked upon since introducing APCs. This will lead to even greater inequity, greater costs and it's being driven by the very people we should have been able to trust to deliver real, meaningful, change. It's a betrayal of the preprint community.

I put together some thoughts in this post. The outcry is entirely justified -though I feel misdirected towards @openrxiv.bsky.social - but does highlight how difficult it is to try to further innovation whilst keeping a heterogeneous community on side.

Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
also of note here is that survey data shows most authors want private - not public - feedback of their work. Also this is just a really nice thing to do and something we would all hugely appreciate (I certainly have when I've had similar things in the past)
