this is by far the best "I quit my AI job over safety concerns" essay yet because it is the first one that is able to talk about safety concerns in practical terms and that understands "safety" as a topic with extensive literature in analogous fields www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
Two changes are urgently needed. First: AI companies need to rely more on the safety expertise that already exists in other fields. And second, before we create systems significantly more capable than the ones we have today, we need new science to ensure that more capable models (and their successors) will make safe choices when we aren’t looking.

Given today’s risks, frontier labs need to run like nuclear-power plants or busy airports, with layers of redundancy and careful, time-consuming planning, so that the occasional and inevitable human error does not open a door to disaster. Right now, AI companies don’t know how—but other people do. In a nuclear-power plant, the technical systems and rules people follow are set up so that, if equipment breaks or someone pushes the wrong button, we still won’t risk a meltdown. OpenAI and other labs are growing and deploying frontier AI with far less redundancy and rigor than this, even though the harm from an irreversible loss of control would be much greater than the harm from any single meltdown. Even short of a full loss of control, we could see autonomous swarms of AI agents that act without human permission. Imagine “rogue” agents that work like teams of hackers (for example, holding hospital computer systems for ransom) but never need to sleep.

Trump’s “Super Intelligence Force” puts AI, intelligence, trade and defence officials under his control while giving tech companies direct access to policy decisions they could profit from, creating fertile ground for corporate profiteering, regulatory capture and corruption.

This is a helpful piece -- that convinces me that AI's use in K-12 should be extremely limited. A key irony is that what my high school students did best was think deeply when they had done the reading, discussed with other humans, and wrote multiple drafts -- things tech can never replace.

jon (2017) (1/3)
Warm yellow fancomic cover. A gray toned comic panel of Jon Arbuckle from Garfield lies, as though on a table, in the center of the cover.

JON: a fancomic by gale galliganPANEL 1
Exterior of a suburban house.
LIZ (off): I promise, you'll have a great time. We've known each other since undergrad, they're all really nice.
JON: But do any of them like polka?

PANEL 2
Liz and Jon prep snacks in the kitchen.
LIZ: Sweetie, nobody likes polka.
JON: Tell that to the international polka association.

PANEL 3
They carry party snacks out of the kitchen.
JON: Remind me: Jody and Evan, Ravi and Dan, Anna?
LIZ: Emma and Cameron.

PANEL 4
Liz sets down a party tray. She glares at a cat in the foreground. The cat yawns. It's Garfield.
LIZ: These are for the guests.PANEL 1
Garfield eyes the snacks from a couch; a dog, Odie, is drooling over them.
JON (off): So Jody, Ravi, and Emma are vets, Evan's a lawyer, Dan's...
LIZ (off): A social worker, and Cam's an editor. For a science mag, I think.
JON (off): Hoo boy.

PANEL 2
Jon tries to bail; Liz grabs his arm.
JON: I'm gonna go pick out a tie.
LIZ: Come on! They're regular people.

PANEL 3
Liz hugs Jon tight.
JON: I dunno, Liz, it's just -- / it's my first time meeting your friends, and they're all... / I don't want to embarrass you.
LIZ: Jon.

PANEL 4
She takes his face in her hand.
LIZ: They're going to be our friends now.

PANEL 5
They kiss.
SFX: ding dongPANEL 1
Liz opens the door to reveal Ravi (holding wine and wearing a tie) and Dan (in a snappy turtleneck).
LIZ: Ravi! Dan!
RAVI AND DAN: Liz!

PANEL 2
Ravi hugs Liz.
RAVI: You haven't changed a bit! How's work?
LIZ: Oh, the usual. Tiny dogs everywhere.
RAVI: Don't I know it.

PANEL 3
Ravi shakes hands with Jon; Dan has a hand on Ravi's shoulder.
RAVI: And this must be Jon!
DAN: We've heard so much about you.

PANEL 4
Dan thumps Jon's back; Jon stiffens nervously. Liz walks Ravi into the living room.
LIZ: Come on in! We've got cheese, snacks, a few bottles...

PANEL 5
Liz waves sheepishly over her shoulder at Jon; Jon is gesturing to the place at his collar where a tie WOULD be. We can see Ravi's tie very clearly in the foreground.

GitHub Copilot moves to token based billing on June 1, and its users have now got a calculator that shows how much they've been actually burning every month - some $39-a-month users have spent $1500 to $5800 in tokens a month. Microsoft's subsidies are insane. www.wheresyoured.at/premium-what...
So, for the uninitiated, the vast majority of AI startups — from search engines like Perplexity to legal software like Harvey to even Anthropic’s Claude subscriptions — do not bill users based on their actual token burn.

When you search a query on Perplexity, Perplexity itself pays the per-million-token rate — for example, Claude Sonnet 4.6 costs $3 per million input tokens (about four characters) and $15 per-million output tokens (both the stuff it creates and the plans it makes to execute an output using chain-of-thought reasoning, which I explained here). You, the customer, pay a simple flat fee each month.

As a result, you’re shielded from the actual cost of the prompt. You’re also shielded from the knowledge of the prompt’s cost.
Another good example is Microsoft’s AI coding tool GitHub Copilot, where users would get a certain amount of “premium requests” per month, with newer and more-powerful models costing more requests, and users able to buy more “premium requests” for a fee. As of June 1, 2026, Microsoft will move every GitHub Copilot subscriber to token-based billing, leading to users paying what their actual costs might be.

To ease the transition — if you can call it that — Microsoft has created a calculator to show how much your current GitHub Copilot usage would cost if you were actually paying for tokens, and the results are brutal:

One user paying $10-a-month burned around $46.70 of tokens, and this is one of the least-gratuitous examples I could find.
This guy spending $10-a-month burned $54.26 in tokens, and this one spent $23.81 in tokens. This guy spent $81 in tokens.
One user paying around $39-a-month burned $1357.16 of tokens.
One user who paid around $54.43 in a month burned $1,196.55 in tokens.
One user spending $39-a-month burned $204.55 in tokens.
One user spending $39-a-month burned $5,851.77 in tokens.
One user spending $39-a-month burned $595.83 in tokens.
One user spending $39-a-month burned $1,063.52.
