I have my great great great grandfathers diary in my possession - he drew this in 1845. There were no photos so he drew what he saw. I am sharing Henry T Whinfield’s art for the first time ever to the world. This is a world debut.

For whatever it’s worth, the Jews I know are not concerned about being discriminated against. They are afraid of physical violence. So there’s that. (And this is not a dunk on this guy—just worth considering, for all of us, that hate can manifest in different ways.)

We're not being funny, but did you know that there are 16 ounces in a pound? Some food vendors are betting that you don't and they package 12 ounce bags, which "read" a pound. In the real world, most people like one pound bags. Be sure and check when you are comparing costs.

*sotto voce* Look, Talarico should do whatever he needs to do here, but all prosecutors offer plea deals in sex assault cases. And sometimes they offer good deals because the evidence is weak or there’s a lot of mitigating evidence, which wouldn’t necessarily be public.

This is a good point about the First Amendment and the Trump admin’s weaponization of accusations of anti-Semitism, but the linked article is also just really interesting on its own terms. I had no idea that (at least some?) Satmars were anti-Zionist. Life is a rich tapestry.

Whenever anyone uses an unusual phrase, my partner and I call each other that thing. E.g. at the supermarket: “Do you want a spiced nut loaf?” “YOU’RE a spiced nut loaf.” It’s hard for me not to do that all the time, including around my kids and, you know, normal people

I "love" SCOTUS's reasoning that bc they declared the death penalty abstractly constitutional, the 8A standard for executions is "the least torturous amount of pain." Unlike, say, asking if maybe the fact that every protocol raises 8A risks should make them rethink the DP.

But the protesters did encounter another member of his household. After an August 2025 protest, Ms. Shaw Glaser and other demonstrators were standing near the Port Clyde dock when a young woman approached them with a serious look on her face. She asked them: What did they hope to accomplish? Had they considered how their actions affected the chief justice’s wife and children?

A squirrel is standing inside and peeking over the top rim of a hollowed out pumpkin. The top of the pumpkin can be seen behind. The squirrel is wearing a slouchy black witch hat with orange stripes and holding a squirrel-sized chef knife. The knife is because the squirrel has carved the words ‘MAYBE IT WILL HAPPEN’ in the side of the pumpkin and in the ground in front the word ‘TODAY’ has been spelled with stringy orange pumpkin guts with seeds scattered all around.

If you want some backstory as to TN and lethal injection. I wrote at length in 2018 as TN sought to restart executions using a new protocol — a method it has since replaced. It’s not an exaggeration to say that when it comes to lethal injection, states have always been making it up as they go along.

Chilling Testimony in a Tennessee Trial Exposes Lethal Injection as Court-Sanctioned Torture
The trial was a case study in the twisted legacy of Glossip v. Gross — and a chilling look at the botched executions that continue amid little controversy.

One of the many horrific aspects of the death penalty is that states are not good at carrying out executions. Every time I post about this, someone responds by saying that it should be simple. But it’s not, and proponents of the death penalty need to own that.

The tortuous, botched execution of Christa Pike is truly horrifying. And while it feels unique in some ways, in reality it is also only the latest in a history of botched executions going back years — YEARS — in numerous states. Please know: this is the reality of the death penalty in this country.

I got back home a bit ago from Tennessee's execution of Christa Pike. We sat in the witness room for nearly 2 and a half hours as she received two rounds of pentobarbital. She was taken away in an ambulance shortly after that and I can't say for sure if she is dead or alive at this moment.

Hegseth is a great example of a common type of officer who's ended up in charge of something, doesn't have a clue how to do the job, and just falls back on PT, grooming, slogans, and searching for scapegoats. If you put him in charge of a Cinnabon he would do the exact same things.

BREAKING: SCOTUS’s Republican appointees will allow Tennessee to kill Christa Pike tonight, vacating a stay of execution entered by the Sixth Circuit this morning. The three Democratic appointees dissent.
SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES
No. 26A428
KENNETH NELSEN, WARDEN v. CHRISTA GAIL PIKE
ON APPLICATION TO VACATE STAY
[September 30, 2026]
The application to vacate stay of execution of sentence of death presented to JUSTICE KAVANAUGH and by him referred to the Court is granted. The September 30, 2026 order of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Cir-cuit, case No. 26-5864, granting a stay of execution is vacated.
JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR, with whom JUSTICE KAGAN and
JUSTICE JACKSON join, dissenting.
The State of Tennessee is set to execute Christa Pike for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Earlier today, the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued a stay of Pike's execution solely to "adequately address and resolve" the issues presented in Pike's pending application for relief. Order in In re Pike, No. 26-5864, ECF Doc. 10-2, p. 2. Tennessee now asks this Court to vacate that stay and permit it to proceed with Pike's execution today. Stunningly, the Court acquiesces. Because its decision clears the way for the State to execute Pike before her still-pending legal challenges to her conviction can be properly considered, I respectfully dissent.

Lost in the chaos of everything; last week CDC (yes, this current CDC!) issued guidance for COVID vaccination. Last year they recommended vaccination based on "shared decision making." This year it's a stronger recommendation: "COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for all adults ages 18 years and older"

At a glance

Two types of COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for use in the United States: mRNA vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech) and a protein subunit vaccine (Novavax; now manufactured by Sanofi US Inc).
A 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for all adults ages 18 years and older.
A 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine is also recommended for all children ages 6 months–17 years with moderate to severe immunocompromise; for all other children in this age group, a COVID-19 vaccine is recommended through shared clinical decision-making.
Where a recommendation on this page describes use that is not within the FDA-approved indication, the page identifies it as off-label.
Schedules for the updated COVID-19 vaccines are based on age and immune status

NEW: After the Sixth Circuit, on a 2-1 vote, issued "a short stay of execution" this morning to consider Christa Pike's claims before the court, Tennessee quickly has gone to the Supreme Court seeking to vacate the stay — and allow the state to kill Pike today. www.documentcloud.org/documents/28...
