The NYT is ok with extremist ideology as an anecdote in a profile—but highly allergic to any deeper examination of the ideology itself. No one gets to write an op-ed explaining any of this. That’s not allowed. But a billionaire can drop it in a quote as a passing comment.

When disabled people oppose Assisted Dying, it’s almost never from a religious point of view. It’s not because we’re anti-choice or that we want to force people to suffer. We oppose it because society devalues disabled lives and uses these programs in an unethical manner. They become eugenics. 🧵

Every single Democratic candidate should be confronted with the question—what is the greatest threat to Americans, and anyone who even hesitates before saying fascism should be launched into the sun.

Sometimes society at large rejects certain ideas because they’ve been thoroughly shown to be wrong and also because they suck and the people who espouse them suck and when someone comes around arguing those ideas should be part of some edgy modern debate we can and should shun them and move on.

Stocks fall 700 points and it's treated as a national emergency. Millions of people can't afford housing, healthcare or food and we're told the economy is doing fine. We've built an economic system where the wellbeing of money is panicked over but human wellbeing is an annoying afterthought.

there is a strain of lefty discourse where you can’t come to any unflattering conclusions about the populace—those must be explained away by how they are being acted upon by capital—but I think you’ll understand things better if you understand capital can also exploit weaknesses it didn’t create

I think voters often identify themselves as "moderate," understanding the word as a synonym for "reasonable." What they consider reasonable of course varies wildly but often doesn't fall anywhere near moderate on the left-right political spectrum.

It's silly, but it's also deeply regressive and echoes the erasure of collective (democratic as against technocratic) action in recent centrist reconstructions of history such as Pinker's, where Ideas work by themselves (if any work needs doing) while intellectuals and groups are enemies to progress

To be clear, I'm not arguing there was ever a golden age. Democracies have always been flawed, exclusionary, and contested. But there's a difference between imperfect institutions that genuinely function and institutions that have hollowed out while keeping their surface forms.
