Seems like anthro is in a good position to help clarify and point out what wrong with these claims. While also highlighting the political and economic rationale behind these kinds of sales pitches and claims about AI.

the belief that culture and cognition and consciousness are primarily "information in the head" is why so many folks seem to think agentic/other AI can become "aware" in the human sense. But human development, culture, and cognition reject that position. How do we get this across to the public?

There are no kings in America we are not that kind of country. We are sanctuary for the hungry, the homeless, the huddled, held together by an idea our immigrant fathers believed in.

Idk think maybe I’d call it something like Restoration 2029 to signal my party’s ambitious plans to restore democracy, restore rights, restore health, restore the economy, etc. but I’m not a Democratic consultant with a history of losing so what do I know

Data is a new frontier of colonisation. No anthropologist should engage with #LLM |s in their research and their teaching. Those who do, continue a dark chapter of our discipline - and they are not even writing it themselves, but have machines do it for them! #datacolonialism #AI

Everybody will make excuses for them. Everyone will say, “they were nervous” and “not all men” and “he’s the president” but Jesus fucking Christ, just don’t laugh. Just don’t laugh at women’s expense. Literally just don’t laugh at us for existing. “Ew women, how pathetic, lololol.” Enough.

There’s a lot of awful things going on, the US president is headlining a lot of them, and we all know he’s a raging misogynist - but it’s so fucking sad to listen to him mock the gold medal winning women’s hockey team, not because I expect better, but because all those boys fucking laughed along.

I really need Democratic lawmakers to understand that we're fed up with them simply posting on social media "this has to stop" without calling for specific actions to make it stop. We know this needs to stop. We elected you. Tell us what needs to be done to make it stop.

Lot of talk of Greenland these days, so it's a good time to remind ourselves of the distorting 'Mercator Projection' which makes places near the poles look much bigger than they are. Mercator Greenland on left, real on right. The distortion of maps feeds into distorted world views.

We should take Trump’s letter to Norway and project it on every public building at night, every reporter should make a T-shirt of it and every American should keep a laminated copy of it in their pocket to talk to their friends about. There is no greater proof Trump is unfit for office.

it’s always superfun to see my friend Liz Climo’s art shared on here. and this one’s extra cool! “Fuck Ice”
artist Liz Climo’s cartoon features a rabbit and a bear. the rabbit comments on the bear’s shirt that read No Kings and says, “you should take that shirt off. People don’t like it when you talk politics.” the bear holding a pizza replies, “oh, okay. do people like pizza?” the rabbit says, “yeah.” and the bear says “cool” and opens the pizza box to reveal that the pizza reads “Fuck Ice”, written out in pepperoni.

More so, DNA is not culture, identity, nor kinship; which are, historically, what people have tended to use to reckon belonging. Partial genetic ties to ancestral populations do not, therefore, make you "part" anything. That's not how communities and cultures work. It also summons eugenics.

Twittering Machine (Die Zwitscher-Maschine), Paul Klee, 1922, Watercolor and ink; oil transfer on paper with gouache and ink on border, 63.8 cm × 48.1 cm
The picture depicts a group of birds, largely line drawings; all save the first are shackled on a wire or, according to The Washington Post, a "sine-wave branch" over a blue and purple background which the MoMA equates with the "misty cool blue of night giving way to the pink flow of dawn". Each of the birds is open-beaked, with a jagged or rounded shape emerging from its mouth, widely interpreted as its protruding tongue. The end of the perch dips into a crank.
