We had a busy week in Mexico City for an IPCC lead author meeting. When we’re working, there’s no time to get to know the other authors. Our chapter authors had dinner on the last night and exchanged stories about life In Benin, Japan, New Zealand, and Hawaiʻi. Turns out we’re a fun group. 😍
Four people sit around a restaurant table, posing together and smiling for the camera in the foreground. On the far left, an Asian man with short dark hair and black-framed glasses wears a bright blue short-sleeved button-up shirt. Next to him, a white woman with long wavy brown hair and glasses wears a light-colored long-sleeved shirt. To her right, an Asian man wearing white-framed glasses and a dark blue T-shirt smiles enthusiastically. On the far right, a black man with short dark hair, glasses, and a light-colored patterned button-up shirt looks toward the camera.

Slop. My @smh @theage cartoon.
Single frame. Title - instruction: “[place cartoon here - ed]”. Appearance of yellow torn out lined note paper held in place by sticky tape. Text: “The Herald-Sun has this week published an AI cartoon, where previously they might have commissioned one of their (dwindling) stable of artists. And it makes sense. (Not the cartoon.) After all, what is a cartoon, but a picture with a caption and maybe some helpful labels to make a point? In this case, a point the editor who prompted it wanted to make.
I mean, how hard can cartooning be? We would all be doing them if it weren’t for our lack of drawing skill (and some cartoonists aren’t very skilled, let’s face it), and AI means nobody has to pay the outrageous fees that “artists” charge, while they can “borrow” their existing work to train AI. It’s literally a no-brainer!” (Small picture of a brain crossed out) “We can only hope they can keep up the quality, once the AI can only be trained using other AI cartoons.”

Uber’s COO has said that it’s getting “harder to justify” its AI costs because there was no way to show a link between AI spend and any meaningful increase in useful features. This is the first time I’ve seen a company say this directly. www.businessinsider.com/uber-coo-and...
"That link is not there yet, right?" he said. think maybe implicitly there is more that is getting shipped, but it's very hard to draw a line between one of those stats and, 'Okay, now we're actually producing 25% more useful consumer features."
He said that the trade-off costs from Al are harder to justify because he can't draw a direct link. Earlier this month, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an earnings call that Uber was slowing hiring to counter its investments in AI.The comment led to what he described as a
"head-exploding moment," sparking discussions about AI token consumption within the company and the trade-offs it creates, such as on head count.
He said that, based on talks with Uber's senior engineering leaders, he realized higher token usage did not translate into a proportional increase in useful consumer features.
