I am a climate scientist, focused on paleoclimate, sea level change and the evolution of Quaternary glaciations. I reconstruct ice sheets using glacial isostatic adjustment and ice sheet modelling. In Japan but have been all over the place. 🇨🇦🇯🇵🇦🇺🇩🇪🇸🇪

Our new paper out now in QSA models the Storegga tusnami wave using more realistic palaeobathymetry based on the most recent glacio-isostatic modelling outputs for the North Sea, and shows that significant wave propagation south of Dogger Bank is extremely unlikely.

I finally made it back to Uki City in Kumamoto, nearly 2 months after the severe earthquake. Since it has also been extremely dry, there are still visible cracks in the ground at the property I am maintaining. #earthquake

The touchscreen on my Samsung phone was not randomly not responding over the past few days. Locking the screen would fix the problem for a bit, but the problem would soon return. I figured out what caused it. I cleared the cache on Google Chrome (which was at >2 GB), and this no longer happened.

Sea level change doesn't just flood cities, it can also move the ground under them. up and down. Rapid sea-level rise drives increased faulting, and when we look at it relative to glacial sea-level change, one can also see it. 🧪⚒️ Link: nhess.copernicus.org/articles/26/40…
(A) Example of subdivision into undated sub-units for one of the faults (F4). TWTT – two-way travel time. (B) Correlation between displacement histories of F2, F3, and F4 faults (pink, light blue, and green dashed lines) and sea level change (the lower undulating blue line). Black dots indicate age anchor points. Between these points, the interpolated ages were calculated based on the ratio of unit thickness to time. Fault activity increases during periods of sea level change. Note that the displacements do not account for portions removed by erosion; therefore, original displacements may have been originally larger (for example, at 140 ka). Sea level curve modified after Waelbroeck et al. (2002).

Conventional wisdom for using corals as a paleo sea level indicator says that corals must live below the low tide level. This tidal pool, which has a sill above low tide, seems to break this rule!
A tidal pool with some Porites and Acropora corals in it.The sill of the tidal pool. You can see the ocean about 10 m away, and the sill is clearly above the water level.
