This has been an open secret in Australia for some time, with the federal government going to great lengths to *appear* as if they have effective climate policy, while rubber stamping mine after mine. It's disgraceful, and they are not held to account for it.

There's a real thing on Insta and Threads about the ongoing intense debate around personal vs corporate vs systemic responsibility when fighting, eg, climate or against GenAI. But GenAI is so unique: it barely existed 3 years ago; we all lived our lives normally. Yet heavy use still gets excused?

Did you know that producing one pound of beef is 25-50x worse for climate change than burning a pound of coal? In fact, it’s one of the most polluting things we can consume. And grass-fed beef is usually *even worse* — thanks to its much higher land use and methane emissions.

Good article, but there’s one understated piece: higher land use of organic ag means that if we shift toward organic at current consumption patterns, more natural ecosystems need to be cleared for farming, causing carbon losses, making total GHG emissions of organic usually higher vs. conventional.

FWIW I don’t think that AI is an existential threat, nor on track to become one. I do however think that the leaders of the biggest AI companies, AI’s strongest boosters, and some of the folks who are most adept at using it to exploit others are actively hastening along OTHER existential threats.

In 1990, when we started caring about climate change, transport was only the 3rd largest sector in the EU, well behind energy supply & industry, and barely higher than residential emissions Now it's the largest as emissions in those sectors have declined while it stayed stable
