You cannot leave prison without a documented place to stay, a job or rehabilitation program lined up, and someone to come and pick you up. There was one woman we met who was there for 2 EXTRA years at the state prison cause she had no living family and simply couldnt get a ride

The left isn’t weak because of infighting. The left is weak because every facet of our society and economy is geared to the benefit of fascism and white supremacy and it is the challenge of multiple lifetimes to dismantle all of that.

If you lose power during Hurricane Isaias and use a portable generator, remember to run it at least 20 feet away from your home. Never run a generator indoors. Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas you can't see or smell and it can kill in minutes.
One portable generator with an equal sign next to a lot of cars. The text reads: one portable generator can produce as much carbon monoxide as hundreds of mid-size cars. Only use your generator outdoors and 20 feet away from your home.

I wish it weren't the case that India's social media userbase is stuck on Twitter (and Meta platforms), but there's no denying that the existent non-mainstream information infra that was built up there despite the IT cell & censorship is still very much hanging on despite even further repression.

Early October marks the anniversary of the massacre of over 20,000 ethnic Haitians and Black Dominicans from the borderlands who were brutally murdered by the Dominican state following an order from dictator Trujillo in 1937. To date no plaque or monument commemorates this immense loss.

No, but really, outsourcing our own moral discernment to the talking word toaster is not reasonable or ultimately positive for humans so it’s okay. It is a machine. There’s no mortality to it being used as a machine. You don’t remote lock a guy for cussing out his tractor. What are we doing here?

This by Courtney Maum is where I am too. I am grateful to her for the words...
For me, the subject of AI detection is an ouroboros. I’ll speak only for myself, here is my opinion. I didn’t ask for artificial intelligence. It’s not something I need, it is not something I desire. And yet, it barged its way into my life and stole all of my books. All of them. Stole them. Trained off of them. Did not compensate me for this theft. So now, AI can write a book like me, because it stole my own work and learned my breed of humor and satire. So if someone runs an AI text detector on my creative output, it will probably “test positive” why? Because AI is a contaminant that has embedded itself into my work by stealing it and using my own work to perpetuate itself. It will test for itself and find AI there because it AI is a virus that has contaminated the DNA of my current and future writing—a form of intellectual rape. A kind of colonization. A raging plague that some gatekeepers are opening the door for.

If you ask me what I’m currently working on, the answer is nothing book-length. I’m not going to publish a new book in this current landscape. That’s a stance of privilege, I recognize that. And I can’t hold this stance forever, I can hold it as long as I have savings from my last book.

This current literary climate isn’t acceptable. It is not acceptable to have a thing thrust upon us that takes absolutely everything, and then be forced to prove that we are not the thieves.

This reminds me of a recent conversation I had with @alexhanna.bsky.social about AI and workers, in which Hanna noted that bosses tend to think most feminized work can be automated because they imagine the work as reduced to the task itself and forget the necessary relational aspects.

There are only 16K undergrads at Cornell. If 35% of undergraduate women reported a sexual assault, this is an open secret and it’s pervasive across the entire campus. It’s likely that the majority of students have known about this for a long time and know which of their peers are rapists.

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying
Use of artificial intelligence
By registering with ISBN Canada, you declare that your book was created by a human author. You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. LAC is currently reviewing its policy regarding the use of AI content creation and our guidance is subject to change.
