look the thing about leftist infighting is that it is just objectively more fun than fighting the actual bad guys. it matters less and you can do it on your phone

The thing I find interesting about X now, and I recognise this is less important than the evil, is that it now runs overwhelmingly on the logic of content mill sites from ten years ago. A frankly astonishing number of posts are innocuous screenshots with a caption like "wow, I didn't notice."

So I work in web dev and one of the craziest things is just how hard it is to convince people that you can, in fact, just make your own website, mostly for free, and send people the address for them to bookmark. What has been lost is not technical, but the feeling of permission.

Also, at the risk of speaking lefty heresy, the original Nazi Bar post itself is clearly a made up story whose main purpose is sounding cool.

I like Richard Ayoade, but his time on Taskmaster is really highlighting the downsides of never being willing to break character. It just feels like he’s not really participating.

The reason people hate paywalls isn't because they hate paying for things, it's because spreading a hyperlink that purportedly leads to one thing, but actually leads you to a store breaks the social contract the internet works on.

The big problem with the public's understanding of LLMs, I think, is actually that they don't understand why ordinary computers running ordinary software is good. Partly this is because the rise of the GUI has concealed what computers do, and inverted the user relationship.

I love thinking about if accidental effects of biology weren't true. For example, how different would human society be if the frame rate of film had to be 300fps before we perceived motion? Or if our eyes needed 8k resolution before pixels resolved into an image?

Hot take. This time of poor social cohesion and populism isn't because of what the internet does, but what it doesn't do. Over the 19th and 20th centuries we built up the modern world of communications, social support, media, education etc. Replaced key parts of it with the internet in the 21st...

Since I got into discovering old 8-but computers (slightly before my time, I was an Acorn Archimedes child) the most incredible discovery for me is the user port. We're used to things like Raspberry Pi with GPIO pins, but this is basically standard on 80s 8-but machines.

It’s very funny to me that the conventional wisdom on The X-Files is that it’s big failing was trickling out details too slowly, when the show drops huge, concrete answers non stop from about halfway through the second season.

The basic problem with people who strongly identify as political moderates is that it’s almost impossible to get them to commit to even moderate action on huge problems, because admitting there is a huge problem *feels* politically immoderate.

My not-so-hot take is that what Mamdani is doing *IS* incrementalism, and the bar is so deeply in hell that a politician just doing *anything* good consistently is a total anomaly for people. And I think for now that is good and fine, because it is restoring people’s faith that better is possible.
A post from @matzollerseitz.bsky.social reads:

“So what I'm getting from this is, incrementalism is bullshit and we should just do the stuff that we say would be good for society”

And the post is quoting a post from @owillis.bsky.social that reads:

“They call him WIN-dani

Mamdani delivers promised rent freeze on 1 million rent-stabilized apartments https://www.politico.com/news/2026/06/25/mamdani-delivers-promised-rent-freeze-00977449”

Could there be anything suspect about the prominent role for The Crimes Guy, who got busted for snooping on Times reporters and trying to shop them to the security services in order to kill their story about a huge undeclared bung his mates used to wage a secret dirty war against their own party 🤷🏼‍♂️
Some of the left wince at the thought of Josh Simons, who gave up his seat in Makerfield so Burnham could run, being an influential figure.
Simons previously ran the thinktank Labour Together, which one critic called "a vehicle to take control of the party and destroy the left".
The former minister resigned from government after he was revealed to have falsely linked reporters to a "pro-Kremlin" network in emails to GCHQ.
"I think the left would be wise to be very wary given these names," said one veteran. "Those hires are huge red flags."
There are other grumbles. The leftwing MP

I don’t think this was the moment where it became inevitable that Starmer would flame out after two years, but I do think it was the clearest illustration that he was terminally prone to panic and unable to grasp “the mayor is doing a difficult thing years before his re-election is due”.

I think the “how do we know Burnham will do any better” discourse is missing the point somewhat. Labour ousting a sitting PM two years after winning a general is almost unthinkable, and has only one plausible explanation. Every bit of polling they have says they’ve lost the general already.

I think this take is wrong too. The public turned on Starmer for a fairly clear reason. After voting for the Tories for 14 years on the rationale that we needed to tighten our belts, people finally felt too squeezed, and then Starmer came out if the gate with more belt tightening.

I’ve thought about Starmer a lot, because I think his tenure was one of serious moral failings, but I also don’t actually agree with the Owen Jones style, completely amoral, never had any scruples, believes in nothing assessment either.

It’s very odd to see Starmer go because he‘s been going for so long now. Unlike Boris where it was clear he should go, but you could never really feel confident he’d been pinned down, this doesn’t even feel inevitable. It feels past tense.

Possibly controversial opinion? People don’t dislike paywalls because they won‘t pay for content, it’s because following and link and then getting hit with a paywall violates the social contract the internet works on.
