Led Zeppelin released Kashmir in 1975 on Physical Graffiti. Jimmy Page wrote the riff in DADGAD tuning, a modal tuning that produces an open, droning sound incapable of resolving neatly. John Bonham laid a drum pattern underneath that does not swing, does not groove, and does not relent. It marches. Robert Plant wrote the lyrics two years earlier while driving through the Sahara toward a folklore festival, staring at a road with no apparent end. The song runs eight minutes and thirty-seven seconds. The riff climbs, reaches what feels like a peak, and loops back. It never resolves. Page called it the greatest Led Zeppelin riff. He was right, and the reason it is the greatest is the reason it is also the most accurate diagram of a corporate career in 2026.
