Unpopular opinion. The gold rush into war startups building drones, robots and other killing machines has pushed valuations to absurd levels. To sustain those valuations, they need one thing: war. This may become a greater threat to us than Russia and China combined.

When you’re pouring billions into startups building killing robots, for whom ethics is an obsolete posture, you need a few nice civilian projects to make it all look respectable. After greenwashing, welcome to war-washing. www.theguardian.com/news/ng-inte...

‘It could knock a whole street down’: the art of defusing a second world war bomb

Have you noticed that since the Houthis did not block Bab el-Mandeb, Yemen’s humanitarian crisis has disappeared from our media? 18.3 million people were facing acute food insecurity. Did they find some food, or are we just hypocrites?

A small detail that weakens public support for Ukraine: European leaders increasingly pull the Ukraine card when facing trouble at home. Macron did it again today. Ukraine is a rightful cause. But each time it is used to divert attention from domestic problems, people notice. Support erodes.

Unpopular opinion: The collapse of pro-EU parties and rise of the far left and right make escalation with Russia increasingly tempting to retain control, or even postpone elections. This should worry us all. A clique of career politicians at risk of losing their jobs can be very dangerous.

Netflix should make a show about Friedrich Merz trying to regain his popularity after getting slapped three times in local elections. The way they keep digging deeper should really be studied. A perfect show to teach conventional parties exactly what not to do.

At today’s Pacific pre-COP31, Australia poses as defender of small islands threatened by rising seas. 1/ Australia is one of the world’s largest coal producers. 2/ Those same Pacific islands signed recent treaties with the US and Australia against China. Greenwashing + imperialism on steroids. 🥳

Brazil shows it again: criminalizing the far right can backfire. Removing your opponent does not remove why people support them. It feeds their persecution narrative. Like Mamdani, you need to be brilliant and win public opinion, not bypass it. Nothing comes for free.

Spaniards protest for housing. The problem isn't the state but US platforms operating in legal grey zones. EU should ban Airbnb, Uber and others, and build state-owned alternatives serving citizens, workers and users. It would cost a few million. But as US vassals, European leaders won't allow it.
