This review with Agu @mangiarotti.bsky.social 🙏on a topic close to my heart -membranes&condensates- came out some time ago.Only after receiving the printed issue,I realized it's on the journal cover. It does not have much to do with plants, but droplets on thin surfaces is kind of what it is about.

How do biomolecular condensates🫧 interact with membranes? We show that dielectric permittivity contrast between coexisting phases directly governs condensate wetting behavior. 👉 preprint: bit.ly/4qBmVRx Permittivity matters.🧪🫧

2/3 We learn all this from hyperspectral imaging 🔬 of condensates. Here comes another surprise: Condensates show a very wide range of permittivities 😲 - from oil-like🛢️ to water-like 💧, so they vary greatly in hydrophobicity.

1/3 📢 New work from our lab 📢 We uncover a unifying dielectric principle for biomolecular condensates! 💦Contrary to intuition, we find that it is not a condensate’s absolute polarity, but the permittivity contrast with its surroundings, that governs its affinity for membranes. #GUV #condensates

6/8 A side note: adsorption of membrane nanotubes onto condensate can also transform them into double-membrane sheets (i.e. flat vesicles). bit.ly/4kI3k0l

Dimova Lab @dimovalab.bsky.social · 21/03/2025
5/8 But that’s not all! Condensates don’t just bind-they also make membranes tubulate. We knew that already(bit.ly/4itKMj2), but now we also see that protein binding transforms tubes into double-membrane sheets at the vesicle surface.🌀 This remodeling could have implications for organelle dynamics!

4/8 When you characterize affinity/wetting, watch out 👀! Measure not just 1️⃣ microscopic contact angle (note that microscopic contact angles differ from vesicle to vesicle). Measure all 3️⃣ of them to give you the real (intrinsic) contact angle. Check also previous work 📖: link.aps.org/abstract/PRL...
Under the microscope we see 3 contact angles (and they differ from vesicle to vesicle in the sample). They are apparent as the membrane cannot exhibit a kink. From them one can calculate the real (intrinsic) contact angle

3/8 So, when a condensate droplet 💧 meets a Janus vesicle with 2 phases - say liquid ordered and liquid-disordered - it avoids the ordered/tightly packed domain and spreads on the disordered, less packed one. You can finely map lipid packing with hyperspectral imaging &phasor analysis bit.ly/4bvw5IO
