You can’t teach funny, but UCB and Second City really had millennials convinced for a second. @dennismhogan.bsky.social looks back on improv’s heady heyday, wondering what, if anything, the comedy schools could teach:

In the time between David Morales’s first surprise victory in 2020 and his unprecedented upset this month, a lot has changed in Providence. His win was, in no small part, the result of six years of movement building.

A really in-depth look at what it took to win from @dennismhogan.bsky.social in @dissentmag.bsky.social; struck by how similar his experiences with Smiley's campaign were to mine; message-testing text polls, unanswered texts.
Smiley tested those attacks relentlessly. I know this because I was one of the voters who received his weekly polls. He never revealed the results of his internal polling, but everyone who was paying attention believed they must have been pretty worrying. Why else would Smiley have run so negative a campaign, and focused so intently on elevating Morales’s profile? Surely Smiley understood the risksWhen it came to personal voter outreach, Smiley again fell short. I received dozens of texts and countless mailers from the Smiley campaign, but never made contact with a single real person. My replies to texts asking follow-up questions were ignored, and, truth be told, I don’t think anyone was monitoring them. Smiley spent more than $2 million on the campaign (more than five times what Morales did), but he invested it primarily in impersonal broadcast messaging.

In @dissentmag.bsky.social, I look at years of patient organizing around labor and housing that reshaped politics in Providence, feeding into the campaigns that lifted @davidmoralespvd.bsky.social and council allies like Miguel Youngs to victory last week. dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...
