This new Sherrod Brown ad debunks a anti trans ad while tying the Republican senate candidate to Jeffrey Epstein. THIS is how you fight back against anti trans ads.

14th Century London saw murder rates in the 20 to 52 per 100k range. We’re in the 4ish per 100k range now. The idea that more visible, unsanitized , public forms of execution deterred murder just doesn’t bear out.

my honest feeling is that if you have a problem with executions being publicly televised then you should have a problem with them happening at all.

This. My kid has definitely gotten old enough that my services truly aren't needed anymore, but now that we've gotten to the long form, adventure fiction phase you bet I'm sitting on the floor every night I can to read aloud. Sharing a story with your child is one of the best things in life.

The only way being more expressive and reaction would manifest by being more aggressive is if the only tool you've been given for emotional expression is aggression. That's not a biology thing..that's a culture thing.

100%. It didn't make me more aggressive at all, but it did make me more *expressive* and *reactive*. Since I'm not an aggressive person what that means is that I was better able to cope with stress by *doing something* like tidying up or going for a walk because it was easier to initiate.

We let an entire generation of kids suffer from the effects of unfettered social media with disastrous results. We can't let an entire new generation be Guinea pigs to this and let it affect their development without understanding what usage will do to them.

Jesus, take the (wh)eel! Did you know that there were eels on the table at the Last Supper? Da Vinci's famous painting has a plate of grilled eel & oranges -- a popular local dish that Leonardo himself probably enjoyed. The ingredients show up on one of his shopping lists! 1/2
Closeup of the plate of eel and oranges from Da Vinci's Last Supper. The eel is sitting on a plate, cut up into 4 pieces. Little eel nuggets, if you will. There is a glass next to the plate with what we should probably assume is wine, but which could also be Mountain Dew Code Red. Wine makes more sense canonically. Mountain Dew makes more sense comedically. You decide.

There are several rolls on the table that look a bit like potatoes but can't possibly be, and a small bowl behind the eels. You can see a hand behind the bowl; it belongs to James the Greater. He seems like he's telling the eels to slow down, and use their walking feet. Which, is just silly, tbh.

One wonders if you could read his future from the lines on that hand: early martyrdom, a post-death sail to Spain, a pilgrimage by Shirley MacLaine...it's probably all right there.

I suspect that James the Greater probably wanted his friends to call him Big Jake, but it never happened. Life is full of such little tragedies. Da Vinci's Last supper, with the plate of eels and oranges highlighted. You know this painting, and I don't feel the need to describe it. If nothing else, "The DaVinci Code" made it famous, but not for eel-related reasons. More's the pity. I do think it's interesting to extend the DaVinci Code hypothesis and presume that *every* figure in the painting besides Jesus is secretly Mary. Did Jesus travel around with a harem of hairy women? We can infer it from the painting. And...you know...it worked for Jerome. So why not?

FYI: you should have known that the much decried* performance at the opening of the Paris Olympics wasn't about the Last Supper. There were no eels. IFKYK.

* There are people in the world who seem to build most of their lives around feeling personally attacked, and who live to decry All The Things. They are almost never the people whom the world is actually besieging, and you can tell because they have the time for performative public martyrdom. They suck.

Fun fact: TIL that "whelm" is a verb meaning "engulf, bury, submerged" so when I say I wish merely to be whelmed, I'm not even saying I do not wish to be engulfed. Simply that I do not wish to be so engulfed that it feels insurmountable.

It's because even in the throes of terror it reflects confidence in an outcome. The sure and certain knowledge that this is the worst of all possible worlds (and will never get better) feels safer to some than any entertaining of hope.
