The reason I don't want a
"Christian nation" isn't because
I'm against Christianity.
It's because I've studied church history and learned about the horrors caused by the church pursuing political dominion.
Separation of church and state doesn't just help protect religious freedom, it helps keep Christianity Christian rather than becoming indistinguishable from the empire.

If our Christianity causes kids to go hungry, the sick to go without healthcare, the immigrant to be unwelcome, the needy to be called "parasites," all while billionaires get richer, we've completely disregarded the most basic elements of Jesus' teachings.

If you want other human beings to be treated in a way that you’d refuse to be treated, then I’m not interested in hearing about your religious beliefs. You’ve already told me what they are by wanting other human beings to be treated in a way that you’d refuse to be treated.

If you are overwhelmed by all the cruelty and tempted into hopelessness, you are a good person and on the right side of history. Those in power want nothing more than to steal your hope and drive you into apathy. Keeping your empathy and hope alive is an act of resistance.

Beware of any Christian movement that demands the government be an instrument of God's wrath but never a source of God's mercy, generosity, or compassion.

It is such a weak and fragile god who needs a political party, a president, a Supreme Court, and a nation to defend them and fight their battles for them. God does not need your defense. The poor, the hungry, the sick, the disabled, the children, the immigrant, and the powerless do.

This is Christian extremism. If a radical Muslim military leader was doing this in another country, using the Quran to stoke commitment to a holy war among young recruits, the condemnation from American Christians would be swift and severe. The hypocrisy is astounding.

If you are using God to justify supporting things that would make you cry out to God in agony for help if it was being done to you, you are not worshiping God. You are worshiping cruelty and calling it “God.”

He's already here. He's the refugee detained for simply seeking asylum from political violence. He's the Palestinian being bombed. He's the hungry kid no longer getting SNAP benefits.
He's the sick grandmother no longer getting healthcare. He's the homeless arrested for sleeping outside. We will be judged by him by how we treat them: Matthew 25:31-46. It's a broken Christianity that threatens people with Jesus' return while refusing to recognize him in the faces of those who are suffering.

One of the greatest deceptions of our time is the false narrative that tells us we should be more concerned about an immigrant being here illegally and misusing social services than we are about the ultra wealthy threatening our entire existence just to become wealthier.

Religious nationalism looks like seeing a person from another country with their nation's flag, holding their religion's scriptures, and a gun and calling them a terrorist, yet when you turn and see a person from your own religion and country doing the exact same thing, you call them a patriot.

When you worship power, compassion and mercy will look like sins. When you worship power, harsh treatment towards those you see as "enemies" will look like righteous strength. When you worship power, the value and dignity of others is solely measured by their conformity to you.

Dolly Parton was a Christian who didn't use her religion to control and condemn others, but to welcome them, love them, and be generous to them. She didn't wear her religion as an arrogant status symbol. She just loved people. She was a talented, brilliant, and caring person who led with love.
In a world of Christian nationalism, be a Dolly Parton.

Please pray for my community here in Idaho, especially Twin Falls and the families of those who were killed and injured in the mass shooting. Please speak out for common sense gun reform so that we don’t have to keep living through perpetual gun violence like this. Lord, have mercy.

Christian idolatry looks like thinking it is a Godly use of our tax dollars to coat statues in
23.75-karat gold leaf all while thinking it is absolutely wasteful to allow our tax dollars go to feed hungry kids in our public schools, fund cancer research, help immigrant families, support the poor, or take care of our planet.

"I was hungry" and you cut SNAP. "I was thirsty" and you cut funding to ensure clean water. "I was sick" and you cut medicaid. "I was a stranger" and you deported me. "I was in prison" and you exploited me for cheap labor. "Whatever you do to the least of these, you do unto me."-Jesus

Jesus’ harshest words in the gospels wasn’t towards prostitutes, other religions, or undocumented immigrants. Jesus’ harshest words were towards the rich and religious who used God’s words to justify exploitation and oppression. Yet many want us to believe the opposite.

Heartbreakingly, those who believe only those who believe and look like them here on Earth deserve the best also believe that way about heaven.
Heartbreakingly, those who believe only those who believe and look like them here on Earth deserve the best also believe that way about heaven.

This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.”

One of the most successful deceptions of our time was convincing many Americans and Christians to fear diversity more than racism, equality more than misogyny, democracy more than fascism, immigrants more than authoritarians, the poor more than corrupt billionaires and empathy more than cruelty.

“They should have just obeyed the law!”
There is a deeply uncharitable and dishonest phrase that appears almost every time someone dies during immigration enforcement:

A Christianity rooted in patriarchy will always define women first and foremost by their relationship to men. A Christianity rooted in the gospel of Jesus will see women first and foremost as human beings created in God's image. May we understand the difference.
