I converted to Catholicism six weeks before running for office. Here’s what the pope gets wrong about live-streamed executions.

Last RT: I know someone who asked a mate to provide a blurb for his novel, and instead of reading it the mate fed the whole book into ChatGPT and got that to blurb it instead. I had to be very gentle as I explained that meant his book was now in the cloud, his life's work stolen by a alleged friend

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person.
The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

a lot of people are convinced that it's impossible for the Faithful to banish all the Traitors before the final episode, but it is possible, it just requires one player to make a selfless choice (refuse blackmail). it will never happen, but the rules absolutely permit an early win

I just think it's kind of tiresome how, in a country with incredibly weak unions and industrial relations legislation, the government are trying to act wounded and outraged that unions are doing literally the only thing they can do to exercise leverage

the senior civil servant who worked on the report for McGuinness was on the mailing list of Agenda Europe, the secretive network of ultraconservative Christians he is currently the head of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Dublin
Another Irish voice in Brussels understood to have worked on the report is Faerghas O’Beara, whose LinkedIn profile says he is McGuinness’s adviser and that he coordinates “Parliament’s dialogue with religious and philosophical organisations, based on Article 17”.

The fact that an Irish MEP and an Irish senior civil servant have had their hands in the report challenge the idea that Ireland has been moving towards less, not more, separation between church and state.

O’Beara has spoken at events with representatives of ADF International, the global wing of a US Christian right-wing ‘legal army’ which poured millions of dollars into Europe over the last decade, as openDemocracy has previously revealed. His name is also on a leaked list of subscribers, from 2016, to a Google group for the previously mentioned Agenda Europe network, which campaigns against sexual and reproductive rights. Along with O'Beara, other names on the leaked list include two secretaries of state for the Vatican, other representatives from the Holy See, and the COMECE lobby group.

O'Beara also did not respond to requests for comment on this article.

her brief as special envoy includes opposing religious discrimination across the world, but imo she discriminated against religious minorities while producing this report. she consulted eight Christian orgs, just one Muslim org, three secular groups (inc. the Masons?), but no Hindus or Buddhists
Mixing religion and politics
McGuinness’s report was prepared after consultation with 16 organisations in February. Half of those present were Christian.

The European Humanist Federation says the report’s recommendations are effectively “an endorsement of the requests made by Catholic organisations”. The federation was one of just three secular groups involved in the consultation.

Other groups consulted were Baha’i and Hare Krishna associations, one Muslim group, two Jewish groups, and the European Masonic Alliance.

openDemocracy understands that when humanists asked McGuinness whether she was listening more closely to religious voices, she said she did not have to treat all dialogue partners equally. When asked directly about this over email by openDemocracy, she did not respond.

I saw a video of his remarks in which Micheál Martin stated he was directly elected by the people, with the implication this gives him greater legitimacy than unions. he was, of course, only directly elected as a TD for Cork South-Central, which means he represents fewer people than SIPTU

many such cases in Ireland. I am 100% sure Dan O'Brien would back a coup to topple a left government in this country. there is no question in my mind. he'd be straight in with a column on how sometimes you have to save democracy from itself. but it is most acute in FFG, for obvious reasons

Dean Buckley @deanbuckley.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Micheál Martin does not actually believe in democracy, he believes in the periodic ratification of elite consensus at the ballot box, and he treats any attempt to oppose, resist or even question elite consensus as an attack on "democracy"

this post has been stuck in my head because I was trying to reverse engineer the logic of why just these three genocides count, according to David Quinn. I still can't figure it out, but it is nonetheless interesting the only genocides that count are ones that were allowed to proceed uninterrupted.
An X post by David Quinn that reads

Genocide happened to the Jews, the Armenians, the Tutsis. The definition of genocide must not be stretched to meaninglessness.

Would like to see a journalist ask the 7 of Ireland's 14 MEPs (3 FG, 3 FF, 1 II) who just voted to: -endorse burqa bans -call "hatred of Israel" a sign of "Islamist influence" -identify European Muslim communities as potential tools of "malign foreign actors" to justify themselves
Believes that the practice of concealing the face in public spaces and premises open to the public poses an unacceptable challenge to public security, identification and effective law enforcement; supports, therefore, all national measures aimed at prohibiting full-face coverings (niqab or burqa) in public spaces and premises open to the public as a necessary step to ensure social cohesion, public safety and the protection of the rights and freedoms of others, in particular womenwhereas separatist narratives, systematic victimhood, antisemitism, anti-Christian hatred, hatred of Israel, conspiracy narratives, challenges to secularism, the use of religion as a tool of social control or the contestation of equality between women and men may constitute markers of ideological radicalisation or Islamist influence;whereas the ongoing investigations into suspected electoral fraud in Borlänge and Järva, Sweden, illustrate the particular vulnerability of diaspora communities to organised attempts at electoral influence; whereas such vulnerabilities may be exploited by malign foreign actors or transnational ideological networks pursuing covert agendas

I wonder does David know Norma Foley isn't the minister responsible for child benefit or if he just wants to make it seem like she is because the real reason it hasn't gone up since 2016 is that social protection was held by the party he supports for almost ten years, inc. three by his friend Regina

genuinely unclear to me if Big Jim realises the end of accommodation for Ukrainian refugees is a future event and he could have egg on his face before the end of the year or if he's just brazenly lying
“Those reductions in costs have been achieved through difficult reforms that Colum [Brophy] and I have introduced as policies, but they’ve also been done sensitively and methodically.

“And I’m pleased to say they have not resulted in, what some people thought may happen, homelessness of Ukrainian people in the area,” O’Callaghan said. Between now and the end of next month, contracts with 158 private hotels housing over 4,000 Ukrainians will be terminated by the government.

In addition to this, the accommodation recognition payment (ARP) for private hosts accommodating 40,000 Ukrainians is set to end at the end of March 2027.
