"They'll be dancing in the streets of Corstorphine and Murrayfield tonight!" (I'd have guessed Morningside and the West End myself but having spent at least 3 minutes looking at the Westminster constituency results in the last election, I went with the accurate joke, well known guarantee of humor)

Why are so many British footballers playing in Serie A?
The 1990s felt like a golden age, but there are 21 British players in Serie A this season – more than ever before By The Football Mine What do Jimmy Greaves, Ray Wilkins, David Beckham, Paul Gascoigne and Kyle Walker have in common? They all made more than 50 appearances for England as well as playing for Italian clubs. While they are household names, the first Englishman to represent an Italian club is less familiar. Former soldier Charles Adcock moved to Padova just after the second world war having been spotted playing for the British army. By a strange quirk of fate Adcock never played league football in his own country. After spending a handful of years in Italy, he returned to England in 1953 where he played for non-league Peterborough United. Continue reading...

Very much here for Jon waking up and choosing violence by arguing (not without justification) that Cardiff to Wrexham is actually a better rail service than Paris to Brussels.

Hey, if Quebec doesn't want high speed trains, I'm okay with that. Build the line from Windsor to Ottawa instead, and let Quebec join when they want. But they shouldn't just get free money for whining.

so who snagged themselves 5 gold bars here
“During their search of his home, investigators seized about 300 gold bars, federal officials said, along with about $2 million in U.S. currency and 35 luxury watches. Initially, investigators said it was 303 bars, but on Tuesday revised that figure to 298 bars.”

the only couple I know locally who are fired up about going to local breweries basically go to all of them, looks like work to me lol (also they tend to post pictures of lots of fruit beers and if that's the selection criteria I'd just be bringing them down)

honestly I never even bothered to check, I just assumed "lesser local stout" also I just can't bring myself to drive to a brewery. I *can* adjust my intake accordingly but it just feels wrong. This is true for small local breweries as well to be clear

as far as I can tell from talking to local family / stuff I read online, I have easier access to preventive checkups / care in the DC area w/ my v solid insurance BUT the critical care not breaking me financially would be the runaway advantage of the NHS, certainly worth the taxes imo

I've been thinking about this *a lot* in the context of 2 questions (1 - will the kids move back to the US, 2 - might I have a better retirement in parts of UK) and as far as I can tell the tradeoff as an increasingly old person w/ decent US insurance is prevention vs critical care

Here's a take: the beers coming off Guinness' 10 bbl system didn't make it to DC, which is flabbergasting. Diageo is a giant company and they never put their cans or kegs into DC distro beyond Baltimore Blonde and a milk stout in 2019! It's malpractice! There's a giant market just south of you!

I have to confess I had no idea that they brewed a variety of beers but not stout at the Baltimore facility. The more you know etc.

As with previous industrial revolutions, there is a drag of sunk cost fallacy and corporate pride with countries that were strong and invested in previous revolution and are now facing competition from countries who can invest in the new with a clean slate. UK had this with mainland Europe.

The thing is, this isn't some gotcha memory test about "what precise amount of money will this cost/raise" of the type beloved by interviewers in election campaigns. It's the most basic question imaginable - "how will this thing work?" She has no idea.

New data shows the GOP’s money advantage has narrowed because it relies too heavily on super PACs, which pay more for broadcast ads.
