So interesting how your tastes change over time. Middle school me salivated over 7 row keyboard ThinkPads. But today I'm meh on the typing feel 🥲 Dense, yes, but heavy. Takes off about 5-10 WPM off my regular speed #thinkpad

That boundary is necessary because there are always a certain number of people who weaponize the language of social justice as a cudgel. They are never happy, never satisfied, spend very little money, and will run your business into the ground if you try to cater to them and blame you for it.

I've been checking the source of quotes for my forthcoming book, and the performance of Gemini is extraordinary. I paste the quote into Google, and Gemini will barge in with the wrong answer over and over again. It's not an occasional thing - it's reliably wrong. Very odd.

Was the pre-2022 "This Part of Twitter" (aka Ingroup Twitter) based on visakanv's "Friendly Ambitious Nerd" norm? Where did that norm succeed and falter as the community/scene aged and the globe reopened after COVID? Thoughts and observations on the neo-netizen approach
Discussion between @_chair and @ArchLeucoryx on Twitter; the latter is myself, daytura.

Chair says: "all highbies are bad, doesn't matter if they're sluts or catholics or mad prophets or whatever. you cannot mute them in a way that matters"

me: "Genuinely what the fuck was in the water in Summer 2022 that spawned the permapoaster accs? Like I remember squirt, teno, gabe, skooks, dario, etc. etc. hitting the stratosphere in real time"

chair: "weirdly none of those are villain coded to me and i don't even really think of them as nearly as big as they are (upon checking). i'm not sure how they got so big without being annoying panderers"

me: "I don't think of them as villains either but they definitely made me very very critical of TPOT as an online circle. TPOT was always SF-coded but I think that summer/fall really made me realize how potent SF was in terms of its networking, hubbub, events, locals, etc.

The notion of "Friendly Ambitious Nerds" attained most power during COVID 2020-22 necessarily because it was an adaptation of 1990s and 2000s liberal "netizen" (personal webpages, blogosphere, working w/ garage door open) to a re-virtualization of 2010s social media

But I don't remember if FAN described how to tether back to IRL civic life liberal society. I'm not sure it ever did. And so the fractures of TPOT in 2023 could absolutely be seen along geographic lines: San Francisco, Berkeley, Midwest, NYC, Singapore + SEA, Japan, etc. etc.

... alongside differing expectations of norms (Qiaochu vs. roon vs. Nick Cammarata vs. Vivid Void on "agreeability"), a re-appraisal of Berkeley's rationalist SA problems (Brent Dill comes to mind), and even an old pedophilia case (ChaosPrime)"

Weird advantage of writing by hnad: because it's so slow, I experience stuckness less. Before I reach the end of a sentence, l've had lots of time to think about the next one. When typing I often hit a period, then stop dead, which makes the sometimes aversive not-knowing feeling way more overt.

🧵 What is the minimum viable practice of functional analysis? — A brief primer from Knudsen (2010), with help from Claude... 1. What problem does this phenomenon, process, or finding solve? 2. What other phenomena solve this problem? 3. What new problem(s) emerge?
"Surprised by Method — Functional Method and Systems Theory" by Morten Knudsen in Forum: Qualitative Social Research. The abstract reads, "The paper is a contribution to the discussions on how to combine systems theory and empirical research. The paper focuses on functional method, which on the one hand is claimed as the method of systems theory but on the other hand is often only mentioned in passing—in Niklas LUHMANN's later works as well as in recent discussions on systems theory. The contention of the paper is that functional method can still be an important driving force in the development of interesting empirical problematics and analyses. The first and major part of the paper is a reconstruction of main characteristics of functional method. It is demonstrated how the method generates observations and the question is raised about which problem(s) the method is a solution to. The second part discusses functional method in relation to Niklas LUHMANN's later theoretical developments, especially the theory of second order observation. The overall aim of the paper is to reconstruct central traits of functional method in order to demonstrate how it works, what its function is—and where its limitations might lie."

it was extremely obvious to anyone paying attention that every single one of these "artist alliance" groups in '22-23 were only serving the interests of major IP holders, many tried to call this out, but the fears of young artists who are already often impoverished are not difficult to exploit.

Nice perspective. Benefits(?) depends on the phase of work — "Accelerating the discretionary phase unambiguously increases [thoroughness in project dev.-ing], because it increases the real value of discretionary development more than it increases the opportunity cost of the researcher’s time"

Lumix LX3 finally came in the mail! Ordered it from China so the 2 week delivery time was brutal (but on the faster end apparently 🤭). Editing the RAW files is a delicious challenge. They don't have as much dynamic range as the GF2 files. But the color science is on-point.
