Count me as a big fan of studded tires. For me, they remove a lot of stress — I can safely ride over black ice, ice, icy ruts without thinking about it. I do have a cheat: a friend gave me an extra set of rims for my bike, so no tire change needed.

Thanks for sharing this @cgeroux.bsky.social Once again Fillmore demonstrates his ignorance of how city governance works (through staff reports that cover off diligence) and isolates himself. Even after being effectively schooled by acting CAO. Virtue signalling developer buddies?
Screenshot of vote on motion to improve AT access and safety during construction. All in favour except Mayor Fillmore.

I also like that the linear trendline makes clear that the increase in peaks is greater than linear.

Looks great. AAWT? The difference between the two slopes tells the story that we acquire summer cyclists faster than we acquire all-year (or most of year) cyclists.

A suggestion: a trendline skimming those peaks. Perhaps use an average of the top 20% values for the year or something like that?

I’m reaching way back into my distant past in non-parametric statistics but depending on the smoothing function you are using, some do not give an accurate smooth for the last half of the smoothing window. If it is a straight unweighted average it may not matter.

I’m excited by this. I’m not sure what you are doing with the moving average — are we seeing end anomalies? Would it be best to terminate the line before the points?

#KidicalMassHfx And to the twit who got mad that we were “bringing the kids into [our] agenda,” behold, the kids’ agenda:
An elementary-age girl is riding her bike in the centre of the lane, with her left fist proudly and powerfully raised over her head. She is wearing a black tutu, teal helmet, and probably high heels. A stuffed penguin is in a doll seat on the back of her bike. She is plainly thrilled.

Yes, I got these 3 councillors to pose for a pic at #KidicalMassHfx, but this was hardly a photo op. @lecwhite.bsky.social marshalled, as she has many times before. @shawncleary.bsky.social piloted a tandem bike to help Councillor Hinch participate. All 3 stayed & chatted long after the ride. 1/2

We haven’t seen the full regulations yet, just a briefing. So there may be something they chose not to present. This act and regulations will be a big improvement but definitely far short of what we asked for. Their intention is to release further updates to the regulations over time.

If we add on estimates of missing data (double South Park to catch both sides and add on a similar total for Vernon, based on past performance) we would be approaching 100,000 total.

When we (HCC) along with the TSFANS coalition (Traffic Safety for All NS) were briefed recently on the regulations, dooring was definitely included as an offence. Also vulnerable road users invoke higher fines and judge’s discretion (such as suspending license). Not sure what you mean by filtering?

In memoriam poster with black background and lit candles. Text reads: In Memoriam, Dr. Nouman Ali. The Halifax Cycling Coalition is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Nouman Ali, a member of Halifax's cycling community who was killed last week on Strawberry Hill Street when a driver opened their door into his path. Dr. Ali was a respected professor at Dalhousie University and, by all accounts, a generous and devoted member of his community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, students, and everyone who is mourning his loss. Every person who rides a bike in this city deserves to get home safely. We extend our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved him.

My recent opinion is that it is best to meet one on one with a few councillors to find one or more champions.

David Trueman @davidwtrueman.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
There is no reason, other than money, why portapotties could not be year round — witness construction sites. The beauty is that it can be completely outsourced.

David Trueman @davidwtrueman.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
While not a complete solution, a quick, relatively inexpensive (I think) initiative, would be a porta-potty in every park. I can hear the outrage already… neighbourhood character…
