When I rode to the hospital today, I forgot my bike lock. Fortunately no thief noticed that the abandoned lock on the bike rack was not attached to the bike 😊. #bikehfx

Thanks for sharing this @cgeroux.bsky.social Once again Fillmore demonstrates his ignorance of how city governance works (through staff reports that cover off diligence) and isolates himself. Even after being effectively schooled by acting CAO. Virtue signalling developer buddies?

I admit I was a bit nervous for my first time riding my grandson for drop off at daycare. But it was smooth sailing. He loves it — he’s sixteen months old. Fortunately Brunswick St. Bike lane was open. The far end on the south side of Sprig Garden was blocked a little with landscaping. #bikehfx

Did you know you can get from the Woodside Ferry terminal to the Salt Marsh Trail with very little exposure to traffic? Cycling Guide showed me the way and then helped me navigate the circuitous route. On the return trip we used the Shearwater Flyer trail and sidewalks along (un)Pleasant St #bikehfx

@cyclehalifax.ca (Halifax Cycling Coalition) is set up and ready to receive lots of bikes at the Bike Valet for the Bluenose Marathon. It’s great that we’re able to show the location of the Bike Valet in the free Cycling Guide app. You can even get a route from your home to it.

I hope to see many at the rally today at noon. We need to keep telling Houston and reminding the public we have leadership in solidarity. It hasn’t got a lot of press but cycling and active living are deeply impacted. #bikehfx

I’m in Amsterdam right now. What a wonderful diversion from Halifax winter and the never-ending battles for decent cycling infrastructure in #bikehfx Here, a photo of a new friend, at the end of a wedding night, bike basket filled with three unfinished bottles of wine and the bridal bouquet.

Tim Bousquet captures the destruction well:
Text in image:

But that’s not all. Together with gutting government itself, yesterday we got details of the Houston government’s defunding of a broad range of universities, civil service groups, and arts programs.

We published the entire list of cuts here.

These are the groups that make a society worthwhile. They provide needed supports for people facing crises and need. They advance science and lead us to better understand ourselves. They keep us healthy and intellectually active. They help us express our culture and have fun.

The creation and building of these groups was 50 years in the making. They’ve helped Nova Scotia define itself, brought us together.

My favourite day was in July when hundreds from the #BikeHFX community turned out at 8am to rally against the mayor and several hostile councillors who were trying to scapegoat people on bicycles, blaming them for traffic congestion. The solidarity was exhilarating!
Hundreds of people on bikes are gathered in the Grand Parade square, rallying against the mayor and some hostile councillors. The bike rally is featured on the front page of the local newspaper, the photo featuring a person in a goat mask, depicting how people on bicycles are being scapegoated (blamed for traffic congestion). The headline below reads “cyclists roll into rally”.At a bike rally, a woman and a man dressed in bright yellow tops hold a sign saying “more bikes = less traffic”Several children are on the steps at the bike rally, declaring their need for safe routes to bike on.

How's this for def'n of a bicycle in new TSA regulations? This is my language. Trying to be inclusive while ruling out more dangerous vehicles. Also borrowing from de facto stds. and other provs. The term "conveyance" is already used in the TSA to cover anything that is not a motor vehicle. #bikehfx
A bicycle is a conveyance propelled primarily by human power with fully operable pedals upon which or in which a person may ride and that has at least one wheel which is 350 millimetres or more in diameter that may have an attached motor driven by electricity not producing more than 500 watts and incapable of providing further assistance when the conveyance attains a speed of thirty-two kilometres per hour on level ground.

My letter to councillors on behalf of Halifax Cycling Coalition. I’ll leave it to @sflkirk.bsky.social to post her email which I reference.
Dear Mayor and Councillors,

I will not repeat Sara Kirk's excellent summary (below) of the compelling evidence against targeting people who cycle and others who choose low-environmental-impact means to get around HRM with licensing and insurance requirements.

Councillor Kent, in her motion, cites concerns about safety and enforcement. Safety should indeed be a compelling concern, given the presentation of The Road Safety Report 2025, presented by staff at the TSC last Thursday. But people on bicycles and micromobility devices are not the right target.

The presentation made it clear that the carnage on our roads is horrendous and getting worse. 2025 will hit record numbers of fatalities and serious injuries (by a wide margin)! This is all over the news e.g. CBC, Saltwire, and Global.

Who is public enemy number one? Aggressive drivers! If the real concern is safety, then this is (continued)Who is public enemy number one? Aggressive drivers! If the real concern is safety, then this is where efforts should be focussed. In data provided by HRP (and elicited by persistence of Councillor Morse), enforcement on our streets is about half of what it was in 2018. No wonder aggressive drivers, distracted drivers, and speeders are increasingly wreaking carnage on our streets. This should be your focus.

I'll close by reminding you that every person riding a bicycle is:

- one less car on the road, thus reducing congestion, pollution, noise and greenhouse gas emissions
- one less multi-ton vehicle moving at speed, imperilling all road users
- one person reducing pressure on our health system (40% reduction in chronic disease risk)
- one everyday person just trying to move around our city

Respectfully submitted,

David Trueman

@samaustind5.bsky.social Sam Austin says it best:
Dartmouth Centre Coun. Sam Austin said during a meeting on Oct. 7 that the city could’ve been the one to mandate EV installations for developers in the municipality.

“But instead we seem to have one order of government saying, ‘No, we’re not allowed to mandate that’, and then another order of government that is now going to subsidize … that is going to get the rest of us to pay for it,” he said. “So, yeah, great stuff.”

This comes after the province rejected the city's regional plan for growth in August, saying certain environmental rules will stall development.

It was a beautiful day for the crowds at Agricola Open Street. HCC kept safe about 50 bikes, provided free bike maintenance by Francis from Halifax Cycles and free bike fits by physio Adrian Wong. We also distributed postcards and stickers for Cycling Guide and our new crash card. #bikehfx

The HCC crew had a great ride this morning out to Bike and Bean and back. It was a beautiful day although it started out quite cool (8 degrees when we left at 8 am). Bike and Bean and the trail were incredibly busy — at times it felt like a traffic jam.

Cycling Guide finds three routes. The more indirect the routes, the stronger the indication of lack of infrastructure.

I checked it out in Cycling Guide which uses OpenStreetMap and there’s just a sidewalk there. The good news is that if you find a glitch in OSM we can get it fixed in a day or two.
