What a nonsense sentence. Why not do net zero and British jobs by building zero emission vehicles in the UK? And keeping open markets for the 80% of UK vehicles that are manufactured. Try harder DBIST.

It's not even like this is speculation about what would happen to an emergent industry. We've done it before when Cameron 'cut the green crap'. It took a decade to recover from and added billions to bills. www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-cut...

If the Chancellor cares about the security of the UK and our future prosperity he must fully fund the energy policies that deliver that. Cuts to the Warm Homes Plan would be exactly the kind of short-termist thinking that has locked the UK into cycles of low growth and bill hikes. Don't do it John.

Cop31 host urges wealthy countries to spend ‘much more’ on climate than defence
‘The climate issue is the security issue,’ says Turkish minister at Pacific pre-Cop summit in Fiji Wealthy countries should spend far more on dealing with the climate crisis than the 5% of GDP promised by Nato members for defence because “the climate issue is the security issue”, the host of the next UN summit has said. But, in comments that are likely to prove contentious, the Cop31 president-designate, Murat Kurum, hedged on whether the world’s countries should try to repeat a previous agreement to “transition away from fossil fuels” – the primary cause of the climate crisis – when they meet in Turkey next month. Kurum, the Turkish climate change minister, told the Guardian the world was “already in a transition” and suggested fossil fuel use could be addressed indirectly through other steps. This is it, isn't it? It's the assumption that Questions Are Being Asked is a force in politics in itself, and that only works when parties particularly care about the views of The People Asking the Questions.

Notable change in Labour's theory of their voting coalition. Stronger values-led positions on climate, Gaza, EU & electoral reform shore up the left flank. Green own goals too, but also squeezing LDs. And as many people tried to tell McSweeney/Starmer leading with values can bring back Reformers too

This year's El Niño continues its climb into uncharted waters; Niño3.4 region anomalies are now at a 3.4C above normal (how fitting!), higher than any prior El Niño event on record. September monthly Niño3.4 anomalies also set a record at 2.9C (beating 2015 and 1877's 2.75C).

The Chancellor needs to understand that more subsidy for the fuel poor this winter, as needed as it is, does not fix the underlying cause of the energy bill crisis - our dependence on high cost gas. Eliminating levies on electricity bills would drive electrification and help end this addiction

That Green figure looks ripe for Labour to squeeze. Even with all else being equal, Green -2 and Labour +2 puts Labour in comfortable majority territory. Lab need to win in Holborn & St Pancras, and not be totally hammered by energy and fuel bills, but maybe we shouldn't write off an early election.

On some of that I agree, not sure how taking VAT off school fees says you'll be better off. When most fees are £20k+ you need to be on £150k+ per year to come close to being able to afford it. That's not a key voting demographic to appeal to.

Thomas Edison in 1910. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves on this net zero business, lads
Someday some fellow will invent a way of concentrating and storing sunshine to use instead of this old, absurd Prometheus scheme of fire.
I'll do the trick myself if someone doesn't get at it....
This scheme of combustion in order to get power makes me sick to think of—it is so wasteful.... We should utilize natural forces and thus get all of our power. Sunshine is a form of energy, and the winds and the tides are manifestations of energy. Do we use them? Oh no; we burn up wood and coal, as renters burn up the front fence for fuel.
We live like squatters, not as if we owned the property. There must surely come a time when heat and power will be stored in unlimited quantities in every community, all gathered by natural forces. Electricity ought to be as cheap as oxygen, for it cannot be destroyed.
Now, I am not sure but that my new storage battery is the thing. 167

The ZEV mandate isn't killing the car industry. Maybe the bits of industry campaigning against ZEV put all their eggs in the hybrid basket and ended up behind the times? Maybe if they'd spent more time planning to achieve the ZEV mandate and less time lobbying against it the sector would be booming?
