Is the dearth of posts on the Chancellor's speech because all the news people are in the hall and the signal is awful in Liverpool Exhibition centre? Or is it because he's been talking for 25 minutes and has said very little?

All of party conferences look and smell like cash for access. NGOs are increasingly priced out of the fringe and party members are priced out of the hotels.

Are any Labour MPs going to have the nerve to say so publicly? If a Conservative Home Secretary had issued the statement Shabana Mahmood has put out today they'd be able to find their voices. So why not now?

I think once black clad men are interfering with rescues at sea, we are past "legitimate concerns". Once they're attacking boats, and risking the lives of everyone on board, it's just thuggery. The Home Secretary's statement is on the side of criminals. There's no other way to read it.

Thomas Edison in 1910. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves on this net zero business, lads
Someday some fellow will invent a way of concentrating and storing sunshine to use instead of this old, absurd Prometheus scheme of fire.
I'll do the trick myself if someone doesn't get at it....
This scheme of combustion in order to get power makes me sick to think of—it is so wasteful.... We should utilize natural forces and thus get all of our power. Sunshine is a form of energy, and the winds and the tides are manifestations of energy. Do we use them? Oh no; we burn up wood and coal, as renters burn up the front fence for fuel.
We live like squatters, not as if we owned the property. There must surely come a time when heat and power will be stored in unlimited quantities in every community, all gathered by natural forces. Electricity ought to be as cheap as oxygen, for it cannot be destroyed.
Now, I am not sure but that my new storage battery is the thing. 167

Lib Dem pledge to cut fuel duty by 10p is depressingly bad policy: poorly targeted, expensive (£5bn), and it weakens incentives to switch to EVs and reduce usage.

The ZEV mandate isn't killing the car industry. Maybe the bits of industry campaigning against ZEV put all their eggs in the hybrid basket and ended up behind the times? Maybe if they'd spent more time planning to achieve the ZEV mandate and less time lobbying against it the sector would be booming?

I guess one argument in favour of the triple lock is that you don't spend a tedious amount of time in each election cycle talking about what level of bung each party will give to pensioners in exchange for their vote, and whether or not that's actually affordable.

Forcing academisation everywhere created a whole load of unregulated fiefdoms often dominated by the some pretty unpleasant people. The bullying of staff that now occurs across the state sector with almost no recourse for victims of it is an underrated factor in teacher retention.
