Around 40% of the world's dirty money, proceeds of corruption and crime, is laundered through the UK, its Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories. Successive govts promise new laws and enforcement but they make little impact. Why do govts continue to fail? Watch the Minister's reply.

Climate change isn’t just about heatwaves and emissions targets. When climate and nature loss affect food, migration, economies and geopolitical stability, they become national security issues too. That conversation is long overdue. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I’m not scared, I’m angry. My sites still work, as I have spent a lot of time dealing with the issue (especially last week when scrapers started to overload the server). I wouldn’t even care about them scraping (for my specific things) if they had any indication of community, care or consideration

The US Web Design System is load-bearing infrastructure for thousands of government websites. It makes it easy for small teams with no resources (i.e. most .gov teams) to make usable, accessible websites that work for everyone. Today, it's as close as it's ever been to being replaced with AI slop.

Solo working, not just screen time, has driven the surge in time young adults spend alone More in our latest research ➡️ buff.ly/v7pfxOa
Infographic panel stating 18–29‑year‑olds are spending more time alone, reporting diary data that young men spent six and a half waking hours a day alone in 2023 and young women spent an extra one and a half hours (about five hours total).Young adults feel lonelier than older adults: 14% said they felt lonely all the time—twice the rate of 60–69‑year‑olds—and young people in poor health spent three more hours a day alone in 2023 than in 2014–15.Infographic panel saying surging screen time is linked to increased loneliness — young people almost always online were 4 percentage points more likely to be lonely (16% vs. 12%), with a smartphone projecting a glowing network brain.Panel 4 of an infographic arguing working alone is increasingly important: paid work drove most of the rise in time spent alone, and work should be included in debates about young people’s wellbeing alongside screen time.

Overcoming that requires discipline and an understanding of what is important to measure in a system

That’s quite a surprising and counterintuitive result and has implications across almost every aspect of management. Even if managers understand how systems behave when they get busy, it *looks bad* that systems aren’t busy so the system tends toward high busyness.

Out of my entire computer science course Queuing theory stuck with me the most. It stuck with me because it can be proven using fairly simple mathematical probability models that queue lengths grow exponentially with processor busyness regardless of processing time or inter arrival time.
