The UK government is designing a new scheme for upgrading heating and energy in low income households, to replace ECO (which had a lot of issues). How can government get the new scheme right? We’ve set out Nesta’s view here: www.nesta.org.uk/report/nesta...
The ten building blocks that make up an effective low-income scheme

A diagram titled 'The ten building blocks that make up an effective low-income scheme'. The ten building blocks are organised into four categorised columns:

User centricity: Providing a joined-up consumer experience and supporting households to benefit long term.
Appropriate measures: Deciding which measures and funding homes get, unlocking investment in local economies, and determining how to distribute funding fairly and effectively.
Ability and flexibility: Enabling each local scheme to respond to local needs through devolution, identifying and including households in need, and building the capabilities needed to deliver everywhere.
Do things well: Providing strong guarantees and long-term support and delivering high-quality, effective upgrades to homes.

The presence of the British military in Wales is increasingly a risk to the health and wellbeing of the people of Wales. 🔥 Get militarism out of Wales now! ✊ #Wales #Cymru #Military #Crash #YnysMônTAKING
KICK MILITARISM
OUT OF WALES

Yesterday, an RAF jet crashed into a field on Ynys Môn only narrowly avoiding the tragedy of destroying a home.

This is an extreme example of the wider impact military bases have on Wales every day.

The military low-flying area that covers most of Wales is one of the busiest in the UK. Wales is only 8% of the land in the UK; its airspace accounts for around 15% of the UK military's daytime low-flying hours.

Aside from planes falling from our skies, there are other clear risks of living near British military bases. For example, recent reports link PFAS chemical spillages to MOD sites, as well as the potentially devastating impact these sites have on local ecology and wildlife; the environmental impact cannot be understated.

Similarly, the psychological impact should not be ignored: the sudden and intense noise of aircraft can understandably affect people's mental health, sleep, and cardiovascular health.

This latest military blunder coming just weeks after the 100 year anniversary of Tân Yn Llyn should not be lost on anyone.

ECHOES OF THE PAST

The 8th of September this year marked the 100 year anniversary of ‘Tân yn Llŷn’ when three men set fire to a bombing school being built on the Llŷn Peninsula.

The government settled on the Llŷn as the location for the school after plans to build it in Northumberland and Dorset were met with protests; the site chosen in Wales required the demolition of Penyberth farmhouse, a site of cultural significance, and while this was met with protest, unlike at the sites in England, they were ignored, which led to the burning.

Today the MOD controls 23,000 hectares of Welsh land, and we’re told this is the price we have to pay for “defence”; however, these bases are not used to defend the people of Wales. Instead, they are used to train israeli drones and partake in genocide.

The echoes of Tân Yn Llŷn are seen clearly today. The British state thought then, as they do now, that they could get away with this dangerous disregard for life, particularly in Y Fro Gymraeg; after centuries of underdevelopment and repression, the people of Wales won’t fight back.

They were wrong 100 years ago.
They are wrong today.

TAKING A STAND

There are groups and campaigns in Wales taking a stand

Here are a few:

Heddwch ar Waith - A coalition of groups and campaigns in Wales focusing on demilitarisation and justice, with a focus on ‘positive peace ’. Heddwch has undertaken the monumental task of mapping militarism in Wales, from Elbit Systems testing drones over our seas to the over 90 defence contractors in Wales, making the public aware of the wide-ranging and entrenched militarism in Wales is no small feat.
PARC Against DARC - The slightly rebranded successor to the very successful Pembrokeshire Against the Radar campaign, PARC Against DARC has been fighting against the proposal to build Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, a move that would harm the delicate coastal environment and make Wales unwilling participants in American warmongering.
West Wales Against Arms - An activist group fighting against the usage of our land and seas for military training and protesting against arms factories and arms fairs in Wales and the UK
CND Cymru - The Welsh branch of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament is working to denuclearise Wales and the UK, as well as campaigning for peace, justice and the environment, as well as opposing the arms trade. With the world teetering on the brink of catastrophe, this cause is more important than ever.
Stop the War Cymru - Stop the War Cymru is a group campaigning against war and militarism in Wales. It is the Welsh branch of the Stop the War Coalition and has recently been involved in events highlighting the UK’s complicity in the war on Iran.

Join the movement for a safer, more peaceful Wales today!

During the big waves of privatisation in the 1980s and 1990s, the debate was framed around who can manage production more efficiently, the state or capital. Everyone bought into this frame and we forgot the more important question, which is who gets to decide what is produced, and for whose benefit.

No surprise: new analysis shows that heat pumps can deliver excellent performance even in older buildings with no meaningful correlation between building age & heat pump efficiency. This is in line with my own experience of having a heat pump in a 1880 Victorian home with only modest insulation.
