Massive Nor'easter! Check out the view from space. This is a gorgeous view of the storm that is buffeting coastal areas and will spread rain showers into DC area this afternoon from northeast to southwest. The Atlantic Coast is taking a beat, with some gusts over 50 mph along the Delaware coast.

A lot of the United States is dealing with drought at the same time extreme rainstorms are becoming more common. The two trends are connected: Warmer temperatures are causing heavier downpours, while also drying out the land faster between storms.
theconversation.com
The US is seeing stronger storms, so why are droughts getting worse?
Even though annual precipitation is rising nationally, the landscape is drying out more rapidly. That’s changing the water cycle.

Rainfall intensity matters as much as how much rain falls. New in Nature: Corey Lesk and I show that daily-scale concentration of precipitation dries the land over the long-run, an effect as strong as total precipitation is climatological wetting. Paper here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

More concentrated precipitation decreases terrestrial water storage - Nature
Concentration of precipitation in large events decreases land water availability, and this effect will further increase with a future warming climate.

All signs continue to point to an exceptional, long-duration, and record-breaking to (in some cases) record-shattering March heatwave initially centered across U.S. Southwest but expanding to much broader region next week. This is effectively a full-on summer heatwave in March.
Map of projected temperature anomalies next Thursday across the western U.S. from the ECMWF ensemble. The entire map is bright red and pink, indicative of extreme to record-breaking March warmth. Some location will be 25-30F degrees above average, with a few locations warming over 35F (!) above average.
