A few notes here: - region spans 10-20°N, the main development region in the eastern North Pacific, *not* the ENSO monitoring region - it's very warm in the ENP MDR, but that warmth tends to be shallow as captured by Argo float profiles - SST gradient NW of the ENP MDR is still present (but shifted)
2-panel figure with Argo profiles at top (measurements of ocean temperature within the top 120 meters of the sea surface) and a map of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) from NOAA for the eastern North Pacific (ENP) main development region (MDR) at bottom. Boxed region represents the 10-20°N, 124°W-coast span of the ENP MDR. Argo observations occurred during 5-7 July 2026, and the map corresponds with the daily SSTs for 7 July 2026. On the map, locations of solid profiles are represented by matching-color circles and dashed profiles by matching-color squares.

NEW: NSF has been funding research at a fraction of its historic rate. Last week, the agency finally began distributing money to its directorates and is now likely to pick up the grantmaking pace. But these allocations also amount to substantial cuts across the sciences. My reporting:
nature.com
Delays have kept new NSF grants to a trickle — that could be about to change
The agency is finally ready to distribute a spate of new grants, but it is also preparing substantial cuts to areas such as biological and social sciences.
