She's yelling about graphic novels again. I wrote a blog post about how to track work hours and do the math to build better work schedules. This speaks to graphic novelists specifically but it's good info for any freelancer!

Lino micro-cutting challenge. I decided to try a linocut of this before moving to drypoint but didn’t realize just how small the line work is at 5”x7”.
A 5"x7" sheet of grey linoleum with a red (mostly) contour line drawing of a group of reindeer on it. The reindeer are about 3" tall at most. Some areas of dark are added to suggest the darker areas of the reindeers' fur.

The cool/fun/embarrassing thing about hand making stuff is how imperfections happen almost in spite of one’s efforts to be perfect. (This is a big oopsie imperfection that needs to be fixed but still a good example.)
A three-color lino cut print of a dragon emerging from fire, its wings spread and its mouth open spewing fire around a small ceramic jug. The image is printed in a deep, mustard yellow and a dark red and black. The yellow and black layers are almost right in their registration (alignment) but the red is very “off”. The image is intended for a poster for the Fall run of the local anagama kiln. Letterpress type will be applied above and below the image.

Chauncey begged to go outside, presumably for a walk. Yet, here we are now.
A tan and black pekingese dog lays on its side sleeping soundly on the somewhat damp driveway just a few feet from the door it just exited to get outside. It wears a teal harness and lead that seem a tad bit superfluous.

Perry: Republicans fought ‘indoctrination.’ Now they’re telling students what to study.
The conservative attack on higher education in states like Iowa is hard to watch. But it also provides an opportunity for blue states like Minnesota.

1918 letter from Edna St. Vincent Millay to her editor: "Spring is here,—and I could be very happy, except that I am broke. Would you mind paying me *now* instead of on publication for those so stunning verses of mine which you have? I am become very, very thin, and have taken to smoking Virginia tobacco. Wistfully yours, Edna St. Vincent Millay. P.S. I am *awfully* broke. Would you mind paying me a lot?"

To add my time travel skill set, I’ve been learning to carve letters in stone. At least now my gravestone won’t be too expensive.
A rectangular slab of light grey limestone stands at an angle on an old wooden work table with two small carbide steel chisels laying in front it. On the stone are two letters with deeply incised “v” cuts. The first letter is a capital H with small serifs and a crossbar that swoops out of the first leg and out over the second leg of the h. The second letter is a lowercase j with a wide angled top and a thin curved bottom. Both are very imprecisely carved showing many imperfections.

Another weekend, another broom style learned (but far from perfected).
A hand-made straw broom with a wood handle standing beside the trunk of a tree. The broom is untrimmmed and shaggy. It is shaped in a hawk-tail style with the outer edges of the straw sticking out further from handle than the center. Running up the center of the straw at the point where each new pair of straw bundles is attached are half inch windings of variegated burgundy/red/pink thread. Up where the handle enters the straw bundle there is a two inch section of the same thread with individual straw woven in.

ANOTHER OBLIGATORY ANTI-TRUMP POEM (or, OUCH! Hot-Hot-Hot!)
ANOTHER OBLIGATORY ANTI-TRUMP POEM
(or, OUCH! Hot-Hot-Hot!)

when the volcano erupts
wisdom says you run
but when the volcano
chases after then
what’s a realism to do
but lay in ruins?

*sidenote: i mean, shit; there are other things we could do but
are we even ready for such conversations? i mean, i mean, if
we really believe this is industrial fascism and not just the
usual garden-variety fascism we’re used to then, i mean… i
mean, i mean THERE ARE OTHER THINGS WE COULD
DO…. idk. the conservative dems on bluesky say we’re in a
bubble stirring up trouble anshit as if the cost of gas didnt
just double since last week… i mean, i mean… i mean. idk. i’m
probably just gonna delete this whole thing tomorrow
anyway. i’m just a poet. they tell me to stay outta politics.

shits crazy.

so, for ancestral safety,
you recenter the universe
beneath your feet

one lessens the effectiveness
of the labyrinth around them
(or dies trying?)
when the entire floor, the ceiling,
and the goddamn walls are all fuckin’ lava.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a chimpanzee in an enclosure is sitting on the ground and painting abstract streaks of color on a canvas lying in the grass. Panel 2: a couple is standing outside the enclosure, looking in. The girl says about the painting chimpanzee, “aww, that’s cute.” Panel 3: the chimpanzee is alone in his dimly lit studio, head in hands, holding a lit cigarette. He looks completely dejected, feeling misunderstood. There is a pair of glasses, a glass of whisky, crumpled paper, and an unfinished painting laid out on the desk in front of him. The walls and floor space of his studio are covered in his abstract paintings on canvases and paper. There is also a marble sculpture of a banana beside him.
