When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

I would love that. You’ve done such a great job with Flash. The Shadow has some really fun elements.

Those Gibson stories are real fun and Rozen and Gladney sometimes painted striking covers. I’m a big pulp cover fan. The movie’s script was a mess. I’m not sure the Shadow can be done nowadays.

The Shadow is mostly remember as a radio show but it was also in pulps starting a year after its debut on air. The magazine ran for about 15 years.

Lino micro-cutting challenge. I decided to try a linocut of this before moving to drypoint but didn’t realize just how small the line work is at 5”x7”.
A 5"x7" sheet of grey linoleum with a red (mostly) contour line drawing of a group of reindeer on it. The reindeer are about 3" tall at most. Some areas of dark are added to suggest the darker areas of the reindeers' fur.

The cool/fun/embarrassing thing about hand making stuff is how imperfections happen almost in spite of one’s efforts to be perfect. (This is a big oopsie imperfection that needs to be fixed but still a good example.)
A three-color lino cut print of a dragon emerging from fire, its wings spread and its mouth open spewing fire around a small ceramic jug. The image is printed in a deep, mustard yellow and a dark red and black. The yellow and black layers are almost right in their registration (alignment) but the red is very “off”. The image is intended for a poster for the Fall run of the local anagama kiln. Letterpress type will be applied above and below the image.

When I started in design I assumed the foundries were mostly concerned with the cleanliness and clarity of their dies but the more I looked they really push their “unique” output/creativity which makes sense for display faces but less appropriate for standard text faces.

There are many common typefaces across the books as expected often times with small differences (perhaps, the designer’s fine tuning?) but sometimes the faces are fully interchangeable across foundries. Sometimes (as still happens today) the name is modified but it’s still the same typeface.

Chauncey begged to go outside, presumably for a walk. Yet, here we are now.
A tan and black pekingese dog lays on its side sleeping soundly on the somewhat damp driveway just a few feet from the door it just exited to get outside. It wears a teal harness and lead that seem a tad bit superfluous.

The conservative attack on higher education in states like Iowa is hard to watch. But it also provides an opportunity for blue states like Minnesota.

1918 letter from Edna St. Vincent Millay to her editor: "Spring is here,—and I could be very happy, except that I am broke. Would you mind paying me *now* instead of on publication for those so stunning verses of mine which you have? I am become very, very thin, and have taken to smoking Virginia tobacco. Wistfully yours, Edna St. Vincent Millay. P.S. I am *awfully* broke. Would you mind paying me a lot?"
