Lino micro-cutting challenge. I decided to try a linocut of this before moving to drypoint but didn’t realize just how small the line work is at 5”x7”.
A 5"x7" sheet of grey linoleum with a red (mostly) contour line drawing of a group of reindeer on it. The reindeer are about 3" tall at most. Some areas of dark are added to suggest the darker areas of the reindeers' fur.

The cool/fun/embarrassing thing about hand making stuff is how imperfections happen almost in spite of one’s efforts to be perfect. (This is a big oopsie imperfection that needs to be fixed but still a good example.)
A three-color lino cut print of a dragon emerging from fire, its wings spread and its mouth open spewing fire around a small ceramic jug. The image is printed in a deep, mustard yellow and a dark red and black. The yellow and black layers are almost right in their registration (alignment) but the red is very “off”. The image is intended for a poster for the Fall run of the local anagama kiln. Letterpress type will be applied above and below the image.

Chauncey begged to go outside, presumably for a walk. Yet, here we are now.
A tan and black pekingese dog lays on its side sleeping soundly on the somewhat damp driveway just a few feet from the door it just exited to get outside. It wears a teal harness and lead that seem a tad bit superfluous.

This book, if you can find it, has some good exercises and technique practices. I still use some of these with my students.

To add my time travel skill set, I’ve been learning to carve letters in stone. At least now my gravestone won’t be too expensive.
A rectangular slab of light grey limestone stands at an angle on an old wooden work table with two small carbide steel chisels laying in front it. On the stone are two letters with deeply incised “v” cuts. The first letter is a capital H with small serifs and a crossbar that swoops out of the first leg and out over the second leg of the h. The second letter is a lowercase j with a wide angled top and a thin curved bottom. Both are very imprecisely carved showing many imperfections.

Another weekend, another broom style learned (but far from perfected).
A hand-made straw broom with a wood handle standing beside the trunk of a tree. The broom is untrimmmed and shaggy. It is shaped in a hawk-tail style with the outer edges of the straw sticking out further from handle than the center. Running up the center of the straw at the point where each new pair of straw bundles is attached are half inch windings of variegated burgundy/red/pink thread. Up where the handle enters the straw bundle there is a two inch section of the same thread with individual straw woven in.

Adding to my “But Can I Get Work Doing It” toolkit, I have started learning how to do dry stone wall building.
A section of stone wall about 20 feet long Runs up a gentle slope between two fields on the farm at the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill. The wall is constructed in a dry stone technique with slabs of limestone laid horizontally on each other using no mortar to hold them together. Instead friction and gravity keep the whole wall in place. A row of vertical stones, called copes, caps the wall.

No really, I am paying attention. Wait, what’d he just say? I love drawing the backs of heads during meetings.
Four small pencil sketches of people’s heads as seen from mostly behind. Clockwise from the top left are: a short-haired, bearded man is a collared shirt, a long, curly haired woman with her hair up in a butterfly clip, a poof of curls atop the clip and a spray of curly bangs hanging down her forehead, a man with unruly, wavy hair and a large comb over, and a long -haired woman wearing glasses seen in profile, her hair tucked behind her ear.

The Anagama kiln is finally fully loaded. Loading it was a fascinating (and a little nerve-racking) mix of Tetris and reverse Jenga.
The Anagama kiln is an in-ground, wood-fired kiln about 35 feet long with a large chimney at one end and a doorway at the other constructed of fire brick and masonry. Along both sides are porthole openings which allow stokers to maintain the fire by adding wood. The kiln is under a metal roofed ahed with large stacks of firewood lining the open sides of the shed. Looking in through the opening of the kiln, a man sits in front of shelves stacked with a neatly arranged jumble of ceramic pieces of wildly varying sizes and shapes. The arched door of the kiln is open as pieces are still being loaded in but will be bricked mostly closed (except for air holes) when the loading is done.

Scored a couple of $4 finds at the thrift store. Both in surprisingly great shape.
The cover of an album by the slide guitar/guitar/banjo/mandolin/bouzouki/oud/zither/basically any string instrument player, David Lindley entitled Mr. Dave. It shows Dave in his inimitable style of white patent leather loafers, jaguar print trousers, a long-sleeved shirt with a paint splotch pattern and a pair of graduated shades. His long, lanky hair hangs down while he tilts his head smiling. Next to this is an inset head snd shoulders photo of him in the same shirt and a jacket making a sort of L gesture while giving a wry but wisdom-filled look at the viewer. An album cover showing a musical notation sheet with a naive style cartoon on panels on it. Along the top is text: See inside for “Jamming with Edward!” Below that is the title The Edward with a man wearing glasses and a red vest, green tie, blue shirt and blue jacket in profile. Below that are three panels. From left to right, the first panel show the same man head and shoulders looking at the viewer with the text above his head: Edward and the Sunny Smile. The next panel shows the same man smiling. The last panel show him with a very large smile. Below these panels are two final panels. On the left, a full body view, the smile is now super open like a zipper. On the right, the top of his head has unzipped and fallen onto the floor. Along the right of the album are the names: Mick Hopkins, Ry Cooder, Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts.

A little further on this. Not sure about the floral detail on the fabric. Will sleep on it. Definitely need to go back in if I keep it. So much effort for a $20 painting. [That’s what every work in the Tiny Art show goes for.] I love our little art center.
The same 6” oil painting of a tuxedo cat on a yellow wingback armchair. A little more subtle tonal and color variation has been added to the cat to sculpt the face and back. A silhouette floral pattern in white has been added to the fabric of the chair.

Lunch break. A little more work on this. Need to finish it so I can submit it to the Tiny Art fundraiser.
A 6” square image on wood board of a black-and-white cat smushed in the corner of a yellow armchair deeply asleep. The image is still somewhat loosely brushed in with oil paints but has a little more detail and color variation. The chair is depicted with a mix of tonal and chromatic variations around the same Cadmium Yellow Pale (similar to the sun on a cloudless day). The cat’s black areas are very loosely brushed in with a mix of burnt umber, ultramarine blue, and a touch of viridian green. The chair now shows more dimensional form and the effects of light and shadows. The cat shows subtle sculpturing through changes in the color of its fur and the direction of some brushstrokes.

It is just a blob at the moment. Hopefully, it will become a ceramic water cup. Instead of a tight pencil underdrawing, I laid the composition out in loose strokes.
The Waterseller if Seville by Diego Velazquez (Uffizi, Florence).
From the Wikipedia page:

The subject of the painting is the waterseller, a common trade for the lower classes in 17th century Seville. The jars and victuals recall bodegón paintings. The seller has two customers: a young boy (possibly painted from the same model as used for the boys in The Lunch and Old Woman Cooking Eggs), and a young man in the background shadows, (time has caused him to fade somewhat; he is clearer in the Uffizi version).
In the foreground sit the seller's gigantic pots of water, glistening with splashes of water. So large and rounded, they almost protrude out of the painting into the observer's space. The seller hands a freshly poured glass of water to the boy. In it sits a fig, a perfumer intended to make the water taste fresher (something still done in Seville today).

Some of my works in progress on my easel these days. I’ve returned to that Waterseller copy trying to learn something from the Masters. Pet portraits are, hopefully, becoming a revenue source. We shall see.
A group of paintings on various substrates (wood, canvas) are arranged on an easel in front of a bookcase. The paints are (left to right) a small 6” image of a tuxedo cat sleeping on a yellow, winged armchair, a head and shoulders image of a tabby cat looking very serious (the underdrawing is showing as only the background has any paint on it and thar is a loose wash of yellow and brown), a primed canvas with a pencil drawing of a Pekingese dog siiting with its back to the viewer, looking over its shoulder at us, These pictures are leaning and partially covering on a larger canvas with a partially painted copy of Diego Velazquez’s The Waterseller. On the ledge of the easel sit a jar of thinning agent with brushes standing in it, and some miscellsneous jars of oil and mediums.

Next a skeleton carries a large basket of calla lilies with the help of another who pushes against its back. Next a reindeer-headed skeleton with maracas and a winged skeleton playing guitar flying above. Then a fish with legs and two more skeletons.“Cazadores de sueños” A black ink lino cut print with a group of skeletons at the bottom. From left to right, the first skeleton pushes the second which jumps holding a fishing pole and line, then a skeleton rides an unicycle while holding up a large butterfly net. Anyone in Denver should check out the art exhibits at the Botanic Gardens. Jazz Holmes mixes vibrant paint, collage, glitter, and rhinestones in images that celebrate her culture and family. 1/2
A colorful portrait of three Creole women holding chickens before a background of enlarged vegetables, including onion, carrot, and leek). The women are dressed in colorful robes (?) of green, red, and plum and orange. The robes are studded with matching color rhinestones. The title is Tchoupitoulas referencing the dish Pollo Tchoupitoulas. A portrait of a brown-skinned woman in a billowy top with a deep, emerald green bodice and red sleeves with blue polka dots. The bodice is painted and the sleeves are collaged from the wrappers of Cracker Jacks prizes. She is holding a ziploc bag filled with something light brown in her left hand. Her right hand is raised with her pinky lightly touching her teeth. Her long hair hangs down in a flat tan silhouette. Behind her is a pale blue background filled with oversized flowers and leaves.A two-panel painting with an overall yellow coloration. Two women stand back to back looking out at the viewer as they hold two enormous crawfish. Behind them are giant pepper plants with blossoms. The women wear black pants and yellow sleeveless tops.
