The Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 made landfall in #Miami on the morning of September 18, 1926. I am publishing this post one month ahead of the anniversary to share some new wind speed maps I created, which I hope can be useful to the community as the centennial approaches.

Just have to repost this again. And, I'll confess that I never thought this could actually be done. I always thought the uncertainty and the unsteadiness of the wind field would be too much. Amazing.

CRAZY microburst winds in northwest DC toppled trees, wires. The area from Van Ness to Cathedral Heights in NW DC was ROCKED by Tuesday's storms with many trees down, some onto cars. Chairs were blown off a roof. This video from Ari Neugeboren in NW DC resembles a hurricane.

Ground-Based Doppler Radar Observations of Wave-Like Coherent Structures along the Inner Edge of the Tropical Cyclone Eyewall
Monthly Weather Review
Newly described structures in a hurricane's eye.
Reconnaissance planes flying into hurricanes, and modelers studying hurricane dynamics, have sometimes noted wave-like fingers of cloud extending out from a storm's inner eyewall into the eye. This study systematically describes these structures' characteristics for the first time
based on radar images, and suggests that they occur in a variety of tropical cyclones and may be a distinct class of tropical cyclone features.

Fig. 15 from Yunge and Nolan 2026. NEXRAD base elevation reflectivity scans showing wave-like coherent structures in eleven TCs across twelve times. All panels are plotted using a 120 km x 120 km domain. The bracketed values in the plot titles are the best track intensity followed by VWS in m s-1 interpolated to the sweep time; see Table 2. Storms are shown from left to right, top to bottom in order of increasing VWS magnitude. The VWS and storm motion vectors are the thick and thin black arrows extending from the interpolated best track center (“+” marker), respectively, plotted to scale between panels. Mean beam center altitude rings are plotted and labeled in km as in section 3. Coastlines are plotted in red. The x- and y-axis labels indicate x- and y-distance from the radar in km.Fig. 16 from Yunge and Nolan 2026. Azimuthal VD shear (S; shaded), reflectivity (black contours), and SW = 4 m s-1 (magenta contour) within the 30 km x 30 km boxed region from each corresponding panel in Fig. 15. These panels show the subsequent base elevation, higher-PRF CD sweeps for each case (mean sweep elevation bracketed in title) aside from Maria (panel (b)), for which the 0.9° CD sweep is displayed. Reflectivity contour levels are given in the panel subtitles. Reflectivity and SW are median-filtered using window sizes of 3 x 3 and 5 x 5 gates, respectively, before plotting. The x- and y-axis labels indicate x- and y-distance from the radar in km.

This is one of the most remarkable misovortex signatures I've seen so far in SAR imagery (same image different colormaps)
High-resolution Sentinel-1A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) wind speed image of Cyclone Narelle approaching eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia on March 21, 2026 around 09:18 UTC. The cyclonic wind field is in the shape of an elliptical ring, elongated in the north-south direction, surrounding a calmer eye. Thin, high-frequency wavy oscillations of stronger and weaker wind speeds extend along the inner edge of the northeastern portion of the ring, marked by a cyan arrow. The same SAR scan as shown in the other image in this post, but plotted using a colormap with linearly increasing brightness values.
