NOAA data confirms that we just went through the warmest August and the warmest climatological summer (June-July-August) on record for Colorado. Stay tuned for our monthly summary (coming soon!) which will include stats on the many, many records broken this summer. #cowx

"Quadrant chart" showing precipitation on the horizontal axis and temperature on the vertical axis for all June-July-August periods since 1895 in Colorado. 2026 stands above all other years as the warmest summer on record. It was also the 22nd driest summer.

Hurricane Lowell has such classic category 5 signatures tonight. Satellite estimates falling short I assume because the surrounding cloud tops aren't cold enough. But one look at that eye is a dead giveaway.

I’m going to be pedantic and say that there’s no such thing as “hurricane conditions in gusts”. If you have hurricane conditions, you have to have at least a minute’s worth, because that’s how a hurricane is defined. “Gusts to hurricane force” is technically correct, however.

I feel like this is likely a case of satellite intensity estimates falling short. The symmetry of the eye, stadium, warmth, is classic cat-5. Too much weight on how cold the CDO is - will underestimate intensity every time. Classic example - Dorian.
