"what do you mean, people have to remember how to count?" is only possible if you have used mindbogglingly vast resources to outsource every smallest possible hassle in your life to someone else.

This should be the moment people finally realise that Farage has turned them into fascists. If you’re choosing this dangerous inhumanity over the rescue work of the RNLI, you’ve lost your minds to racism and hatred.

I’ve read plenty of “They must have known Canada would never agree to this, so the logical conclusion is that they didn’t want to make a deal at all” takes. And yes, that’s the logical conclusion if they knew what they were doing. But I truly don’t think we can take that for granted anymore.

In fact it's the reverse, the problem with attempts to compromise on the principles around scientific integrity and ethics is that they fundamentally introduce flaws into the information that can be gathered, into the understandings that are produced from such research, that persist for decades.

From @gregggonsalves.bsky.social newrepublic.com/article/1882...
The reality is, most people don’t really understand what public health does. The pandemic increased that sense of uncertainty and misunderstanding, Gonsalves said. “It’s not masking and vaccine mandates. It’s the fact that you don’t get food poisoning when you walk into a restaurant, the water coming out of your tap isn’t filled with lead, your building tiles aren’t filled with asbestos, you don’t have to deal with polio or other childhood infectious diseases.” In order to save public health, we need to understand the countless and almost entirely invisible ways it saves our lives every day.

interesting rationale from a prospective juror in the Elon Musk Twitter stock manipulation case
Judge Breyer: Okay. Thank you very much. Juror 96, I think that you also have strong views. Could you set them aside?

Juror 96: I believe that in a criminal trial, I would feel morally obligated to convict. However, in a civil trial, I feel I can set those views aside.

Judge Breyer: That’s interesting.

Juror 96: I’m happy to expand.

Judge Breyer: Sure.

Juror 96: I believe it would be to the benefit of the human race were Mr. Musk to be sent to prison. However, I don’t believe a loss of several hundreds of millions of dollars in a civil trial would be even a drop in the bucket to his wealth, so it doesn’t really matter. Therefore, I would be able to consider the facts.
