The gap between my uni's budget projections and year-end actuals was $114 million (a $26 million deficit to an $87 million surplus). Of course the hiring freeze continues and campus is filthy. Capital reserves grew from $164 to $306 million during the freeze. They'll likely build a supercomputer.

The underlying assumption is that budget allocations in universities are ideologically neutral: that institutional investment just goes to wherever lots of students choose to spend their time. But this is not how it works. Admin decide what forms of knowledge they want to incentivize.

Our research found that other companies use the same fundamental technologies as in the article (see screenshot) to target customers and drive profits. Sainsbury's calculates a 'customer potential sales value score' for their rewards program with higher potential spenders receiving more discounts.
Figuring this out required machine learning. Unlike traditional data analytics, where researchers decide which patterns to look for, machine learning models can sift through hundreds of variables on their own to find combinations that help predict particular behaviors.

Data scientists had trained the new casino model on historical data. It was Mr. Butts's job to test it on real customers. Each week, the model vacuumed up information about a user's recent activity. The score it calculated was known internally as "elasticity," a term borrowed from economics.

Users with below-average scores were deemed "inelastic" and marked for fewer incentives. The "elastic" bettors remained.Visual description of Sainbury's program

Meanwhile, the Carney government is also seeking to privatize Canada's largest airports (as signalled while launching the Canada Strong Fund). While airport privatization has been a disaster elsewhere, Carney says that's actually a good thing for Canada because we can learn from mistakes.

Appreciate David giving me the chance to muse. These ideas come from work on a larger project (I've read A LOT on this, from how the field of economics developed to histories of universities under dictatorship to sociology on metrics to polisci on democracies and backsliding to so much philosophy).
Screenshot of article which reads: “In general,” Baker said, conservative states have a vision for colleges and universities “around job creation and indoctrination.” And they have become savvier, learning how institutions are really organized and “how to hit higher ed where it hurts.”

At the same time, she said, “you can’t work at indoctrinating other people and not indoctrinate [yourself]. I really do think they were shocked at how few people signed up for their civic centers. They genuinely believe students hate the class options available to them and are dying for these new revisionist versions of history,” and they don’t know what to do when only a handful of students show up.Screenshot of article which reads: Instead, Baker told me, “the blue-state vision for higher ed right now, in general, [is] job creation only. At its most fundamental, most Democratic administrations of states are thinking that the No. 1 priority of college is around the labor market.” That’s good for what Baker calls their “bipartisanship fetish,” because if both sides agree it’s all about jobs, it feels like there’s a chance for collaboration.

Scams all the way up: The scam as vernacular analytic of digital capitalism

By Courtney T. Wittekind, Elizabeth Resor, Jovanna Rosen, Hilary Faxon, Kendra Kintzi, Julien Migozzi, Luis F. Alvarez León, and Desiree Fields

Abstract
Scams have proliferated under digital capitalism; so too have stories of scams and allegations of scamming. In this commentary, we focus on the latter to situate the scam as a “vernacular analytic:” an everyday mode of critique invoked to question the normative systems and institutions that rule our lives, but are experienced as exploitative or rigged. While this vernacular analytic is a powerful and pervasive means to highlight inequality, we argue that it obscures what is unique about scams amid capitalism's digitalization. In response, we develop a systematic approach to study this vernacular analytic as it circulates under digital capitalism. We propose three features of the scam as a vernacular analytic: critique at scale, the fallout of digital mimicry, and the exploitation of affect. This threefold framework provides a common foundation for empowering us to counter inequitable and exploitative systems by reimagining and rebuilding institutions and our trust in them. We argue that recognizing the power and pervasiveness of the scam as a vernacular analytic, and interrogating how scams operate under digital capitalism, are essential steps toward a future less vulnerable to digitally mediated exploitation.

Surveillance pricing a fairness concern: expert
Economic geography expert Dan Cohen says a proposed ban on surveillance pricing in Toronto is part of a larger “regulatory cat-and-mouse game” playing out across jurisdictions. (July 22, 2026)
010
Dan Cohen @dancohen.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
The City of Toronto's interest in a municipal ban on surveillance pricing has driven local interest in how widespread it is. That's given me an opportunity to talk about algorithmic black boxes and how they can hide discriminatory practices that would otherwise draw public anger and regulation.
How often is surveillance pricing used?
Exactly how common surveillance pricing is remains unclear.

Dan Cohen, an associate professor of economic geography at Queen’s University, says it is hard to gauge just how widespread this pricing practice is.

“It’s really a black box right now. There’s not a lot of regulation, it’s a fast-emerging practice, so we don’t have a lot of information right now about how commonly it’s being used,” Cohen explained to CTV News.It is also unclear what factors are driving the differences in pricing exactly. In the context of dynamic pricing, he says location has made a difference.

“We’ve seen through pricing models, which aren’t individualized, but do have some level of difference that places where there’s not a lot of competition, the prices for the products will be higher, and those neighbourhoods are traditionally racialized or low income,” Cohen said.
