This is excellent from @daisychristo.bsky.social. Labour has an opportunity to fix the lack of focus on building school leadership in Gove’s reforms - instead they seem focused on unpicking what works.

Transferable skills are a modern concept. But they have an older ancestor - "formal discipline". The basic idea was that you could train your brain to be an all-purpose tool. It was an influential idea that had a big impact on the civil service. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/governed-b...

In many ways, the most straightforward is this from @daisychristo.bsky.social which places its main stress on bringing up the achievement of the forgotten third by system-wide school improvement - "simple but not easy" as Daisy puts it. (Great footnotes as well!). substack.com/inbox/post/2...

Typically excellent, particularly the focus on what's realistic and not nostalgic utopianism. I'd also add that "academic" study is not just utilitarian. It can be a source of immense joy and beauty and children not being able to access their cultural inheritance and entitlement is profoundly sad.

It can sound like wishful thinking to say that 90% of students can reach grade 4 in English and maths. But it's definitely wishful thinking to assume reindustrialisation will create mass employment for school leavers with few quals. So what do we do? substack.nomoremarking.com/p/what-shoul...

Agreed. The UK “educated-but-stagnating” crisis isn’t a school failure, it’s a much more profound economic failure. UK schools have problems mostly related to resources; seems unreasonable to task stretched teachers of thinking of which pupils will get employed where if govt has no path for success

The UK economy has problems. There's been barely any per capita GDP growth or real income growth in about 20 years. Policymakers would be better off finding solutions for this than getting primary schools to make lists of children at risk of unemployment. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/schools-ar...
