And the connecting thread is not just lack of accountability, but the idea that the lack of accountability is a perk that goes hand in hand with the inside track to power, both of which are inherited and passed down in a caste system.

it is 100% defensible to think "ai bad", but I do wish there weren't so many leading figures in the "ai bad" movement (eg Bender on tech, Zitron on econ) who are wrong all the time

I don’t believe Claude is meaningfully conscious, but dunking on this is kind of weird. Unless you reject materialism—the Pope obviously does, so why Anthropic guys would try to convince him is anyone’s guess!—it seems obviously true that *a* model could be conscious, even if *these* models aren’t.

Not the least bit surprising but still extremely grim to read. time.com/article/2026...
Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.

This sounds like a trivial point, but I don't think it is at all.
Still, other AI researchers say today’s machines don’t yet qualify for the “G” in AGI. Joscha Bach of the California Institute for Machine Consciousness, another AGI pioneer, says a truly intelligent system should not need to devour the entire Internet and consume vast amounts of computing power for even the simplest query. “We would have a system that is much more compact than us and has read far less than us—that is learning much better than us and reasoning much better than us,” he says.

Kinda weird that Eric Schmidt gave $3m to the "yes" side, and his wife Wendy gave $5m to the "no" side. Of course, for you or I, the equivalent amount of money is like $100, so maybe it wasn't worth mentioning around the dinner table.

I think a question all prospective employees should ask hiring managers is "Does your company use Workday?" Not sure what I'd do if I knew the answer was yes. Ask for more money? Ask if the benefits include emotional counseling to counteract the stress of dealing with Workday?

The most important thing I learned in my 20s is that being smart doesn't make you special. Eventually you need to learn to try hard and to enjoy learning to do things you're not immediately good at. It turns out that the people who didn't learn this lesson were reading Harry Potter fanfic.

I’m sorry, but did Jensen Huang actually claim that “spas” and “luxury” are new industries that were invented in his lifetime?
Listen, there's a whole bunch of industries that exist today that
didn't exist halfway through my life. People talking about wellness
centers and spas and all these different entertainment and luxury
industries, and quite frankly, the whole entire luxury market didn't
exist. I think we're just going to have new industries, that's all.

Bias is a term of art in statistics that has long been used this way for mathematical models. It's not anthropomorphizing, and the concept is actually really important, because models can develop bias without being fed biased data--there's a whole literature out there on biased estimators.

I’m not the first to point out that this is already true: humans live in a world controlled by artificial human creations (governments, corporations, “society”).
Last year, horses galloped into the debate from another direction when the
historian-futurist Yuval Noah Harari predicted that, in the not distant future,
humans will be to artificial intelligence what horses are to humans. Horses
live in a world ordered by humans, Harari pointed out, even though horses
aren't aware of it: they know nothing about things like animal law or finance,
but these things govern their lives. In the future, Harari suggested, humans
will be the horses; we won't even comprehend the systems established and run
by machines that rule our lives. Also gruesome: Cory Doctorow warns against
a future populated by "reverse centaurs," in which the robot is the head and
humanity is the body: the horse's ass.

This makes me hopeful. This number is aspirational but nowhere near out of reach: a working professional could realistically cash out their 401k and buy off a public official. Owning a senator is more attainable for most Americans than home ownership.

Trump at the UN inadvertently showing the value of credibility. He’s bluffed so many times that his extreme threats win no concessions and barely even get a reaction. Even if people are scared by it, he reneges and fails to follow through so often that no one thinks giving in could be worth it.

The issue with AI was never that the average wage of the employed might go down. On the contrary, as productivity increases some of that increase will be captured by the employed labor.

Few features of modern work are as widely criticised as meetings. Using data from over 9,000 workers in Norway, this column examines how meetings are organised and their effects on firm outcomes. The average worker in our survey spends 4.7 hours per week in meetings, with managers and professionals spending substantially more time in them than other workers. Meetings are substantially more common at firms with higher wage premia and higher revenue, while workers who spend more time in meetings experience faster wage growth, suggesting that meetings provide opportunities to exchange information and knowledge that may benefit not only the firm, but also the workers who participate in them.

I’ve said this before but the desperation to hold on to some unique marker of humanness, inimitable in nature, really only evokes one thing in history for me: the centuries of backlash to the theory of evolution. I would expect similar radicalism to form now. Many here are part of it.

Twitter user dawnedEUW quote tweeting a "picture" of a white dragon laying on the ground: i can't help but notice that i am seeing a lot more dragon sighting videos since the advent of generative AI.

Could it be that AI's adverse effects on the environment are leading to a change in their behavior, e.g. lack of water sources that causes them to move closer to cities?
