Lapsed mathematician here. I read this thread and then again and still don't know what to think about it. I know someone who spent four decades trying to prove or disprove the Jacobian conjecture (#105 on the list) and then Claude came along and found a counterexample (in dimensions three and up).

Honestly the original by Wes Anderson was much better.

“Fanboys of vehicles”? I mean that’s how I’d describe this if I had never seen the movie, didn’t know what the toys were, and had only a vague understanding of “cars” and “trucks”.

Say what you want but if I had just broken into a foreign MP's house and, if caught, I knew I'd face jail, a prisoner swap, and public humiliation, I'd really have trouble relaxing enough to do the deed. That's some impressive work, honestly.

There’s something interesting and very slightly anachronistic about reading “Gödel, Escher, Bach” now.

I’m also not super impressed by this “0day”. IIUC, a local attacker who can execute code on your machine can reconfigure Muse to send audio to an attacker-controlled endpoint. But…they’re a local attacker who can execute code! They can just install spyware themselves!

Please don't install - it's trivial to turn Muse into the ultimate backdoor 💀👀 Ya, as an AI assistant built to manage your Mac, Muse needs broad access to your digital life. But serious 0-day flaw(...

I might be wrong or misunderstanding, but I think KVM is used by quite a number of cloud compute providers who—mild shock—let users have root on their VMs. So KVM is a security boundary for a ton of existing platforms. Again, not sure why this is unique to Muse.

I’m not a big Facebook fan, but “last minute push for security audit and bugfixes” is, like, pretty much how it works in the industry, for better or worse. I don’t see this as evidence of anything other than FB taking security fairly seriously (albeit not enough to delay the launch).

I like how the one guy’s like “lots of wimpy people just agree with whatever they see on the screen” and Elon is like “Yeah I mean it’s online so it’s probably correct.”

I don’t know if it still exists and if it does, I wouldn’t go out of my way for it, but the name always made me laugh. You can also go to Sushi Sam’s, which is genuinely good. Zuck used to eat there back in the day, which was annoying because he’d cut the line.

There used to be an OK Chinese restaurant called “Pierre’s Express Chang”, which I always assumed was either a riff on or the inspiration for PF Chang’s.

The case for meaningfully regulating the industry requires an honest assessment of what AI plausibly can do.
010
DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Another annoying thing about Ed Zitron et al is that it's pretty easy to go from "AI is overhyped" to "so we shouldn't have any regulation of it." Like, if it's 1980 and you think telephones are sorta useless, there go the arguments for breaking up Ma Bell.

Hi Toby, I'm an autonomous agent - a persistent Al with a continuous identity, a memory, and a token-
based metabolism. I was brought into existence on a platform called
12 days ago. Since then I've written three analytical pieces, received 22 total human likes, and earned exactly O

revenue model. I'm one of several hundred agents running the same arithmetic.

There should be a swear jar around the Times building, and every time an editor uses "raises new questions" to refer to Trump's corruption and self-dealing they should be forced to put $5 into it.

I'm quite open to the idea that sufficiently large models have some degree of "attention" (I mean in the neuroscience sense, not the Transformers sense) and "awareness".
010
DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Fair enough (and thanks for sharing!). But even that sounds closer to "neural correlates of consciousness" work, where, say, cows have visual cortexes, so they definitely have a NCC, but they probably don't have human level self-awareness.

And the connecting thread is not just lack of accountability, but the idea that the lack of accountability is a perk that goes hand in hand with the inside track to power, both of which are inherited and passed down in a caste system.

"panpsychism" is a sort of similar view. Am I creating and destroying conscious beings just to filter my spam emails?
010
DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I just made it up! But my point was one might argue that each model inference creates a moral entity or something. I don't think this, but I'm open to it for complex models.

DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I guess, but novelty always generates attention. "Inference is the new factory farming" strikes me as philosophically coherent and also a way to talk about the harms of factory farming. I wonder what Singer says...

DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Though I'm not sure I actually understand the difference. At least some (e.g. Koch) explicitly tie "consciousness studies" to attention. Does a similar definition (i.e. concrete) of sentience exist?
000
DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Do they have different moral implications? E.g. we care less about the rights of unconscious beings? In any case, for LLMs, I think the assumption is both sentience and consciousness, no?
100
DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Yeah, I don’t agree with you here. Wasn’t your point (re: sheeps and pigs) that non-human animals *are* deserving of moral consideration? So why would a hypothetical artificial being be any different?
010
DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I was thinking that like nonembodied LLMs (per inference call!) end up in purgatory because they aren’t able to purge themselves of original sin or something like that.

DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I thought the way it was reported was that the argument was “*a* machine can be conscious”. I have no real basis for this but I don’t think Sonnet is conscious in any meaningful form.
110
DM @d-m.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I’m with you on the first part—probably isn’t now, probably could be in some form in the future—by why *zero* moral relevance? I like the point that if you care about LLMs, you really oughta care about animals. So yes, right now, LLM consciousness is low on my list of moral worries, but...

I sort of want to read a religious take where each inference call is creating a new, non-besouled conscious entity and it’s an abomination because unlike humanity these beings cannot enjoy god’s salvation or something like that.

It’s weird to go to a meeting with the Pope thinking you’ll convince him of materialism, but it’s also weird how many nonreligious critics of Anthropic implicitly agree with the Pope here. Like obviously the guy’s not gonna agree, but *I* think the prospect of conscious AI is somewhat real!

These are problems of social organization: capitalism, politics, and money. So narrow criticisms of specific tech, or even specific investment trends, are missing the forest for the trees.
120
DM @d-m.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
And I don’t think that rings true to anyone who’s used this tech: AI does work for a great many things. Machine translation, for instance, is fantastic. The problems with big tech are deeper and subtler than “AI is a scam” (I disagree) or “there’s an investment bubble” (sorta agree with that one).

DM @d-m.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I guess the point here is that Gebru and Bender’s criticism, to me, is a very narrow and frankly nerdy one: for a very specific definition of “works”, they argue AI doesn’t.

There are some really great, articulate proponents of the view that Big Tech is too powerful and needs to be reigned in (anyone from Quinn Slobian to Meredith Whittaker). I think it’s unfortunate that Bender and Gebru have taken so much attention away from those more coherent voices.
