Remembering that time when some big name accounts were arguing that X is all good now and the algorithm has been de-Elon'd. Wait, that was yesterday. The same time this was happening.

Remember this when pundits and politicians tell us it would be a "weaponization of law enforcement" to hold Trump officials accountable for their crimes. *This* is what actual weaponization looks like.

Team Trump is telling you, in effect, that 4 years of Biden were so high-impact and transformative that they're utterly helpless to make their own mark.

“Illegally detaining and brutalizing a racial minority until they agree to flee the country” isn’t immigration enforcement, it’s ethnic cleansing. There’s no legal standard here - these people meet the standard! What differentiates them is not their legal status but their race and color.

Counterpoint: no one else’s definition of “what counts” as reading needs to matter to you at all. If you’re gatekeeping the term you probably care a little too much yourself. You can also cheat at crosswords. No one will ever catch you. It’s still fun to play.

Really was one of the dumbest and most harmful things possible for “virtue signaling” to become some kind of epithet. Sending externally visible signals that you are engaging in pro-social behavior is normal, natural, and good, it’s how society works. Other people can’t read your fucking mind.

"why would I ever need a task to be done faster" come on, guys. Because we're dying. Because we are literally all dying all the time. Because we're running out of time. The fact that it's often hard to measure or stupidly measured doesn't mean "saving time" isn't an important thing to human beings

I'd guess that's one factor, but I'd also guess that, statistically, you'd expect more open marriages to fail? Even putting aside jealousy issues, they're actively going out to meet other sexual partners! It would be weird if that didn't correlate with sometimes choosing another partner long term.

Thinking about social and political shifts as “outside forces acting on a complex system that in no way resembles an individual person” will give you a far, far better schema to understand the world than thinking about ”what does the population believe”

Physicists at least have the advantage of a whole world to explore. Philosophers are not allowed any of that. It's all logic and definitions all the way down. There's far more limits.

Yeah, totally fair. But also, there's a lot of philosophers out there, and they all need to make tenure. So they all need to write something that wasn't written before. It makes for bad incentives.

My philosophy of mind professor in college actually said it out loud. He described his own "view", and then when we weren't super receptive to it, said, "there are only so many views people haven't taken yet!"

I think a lot of the most useful ground in philosophy was already covered thousands of years ago. New philosophers need to carve new ground, and all the ground still left is only there because it's dumb.

mc escher is old news, have you seen shinjuku station maps
A neon wireframe of Shinjuku Station hangs in a black-violet void. Purple streets stretch toward the horizon above a white-and-cyan knot of platforms, tunnels, and intersecting passages. Corridors cross themselves, divide, and return at heights that no longer agree. The streets describe a flat city; the station beneath them describes something considerably larger. There are no solid walls, only the exposed edges of an interior that has escaped its building. In the upper-right corner, a small control panel offers checkboxes for floors 4F through B3, suggesting that the geometry might become possible again if enough of it were hidden. An English-labelled map of Shinjuku Station compresses an impossible building into a deceptively tidy arrangement of pastel platforms and passages. Parallel tracks resemble the rungs of several ladders laid through one another. Beige concourses bend around them, change elevation at tiny staircases, and emerge on the wrong side of their own walls. B7F lies near the top of the page; B1F spreads through several apparently unrelated interiors. Yellow labels repeatedly promise an exit: West Gate, Central West Gate, JR Central West Gate. Each belongs to a different understanding of west. A bright red ShinjukuStation.com logo presides over the diagram with the confidence of a place that has never had to leave itself. An intricate blue-ink drawing unfolds Shinjuku Station into an impossible architectural dissection. Orange, lavender, pale-blue, green, and pink passages weave between banks of railway platforms, diving beneath streets and resurfacing inside structures that should be outside the station. Stairways stitch together overlapping planes. Buildings stand along the edges of the cutaway, but the deeper the drawing goes, the less certain it becomes which space contains which. Tiny Japanese annotations patiently catalogue the contradiction. A smaller explanatory diagram occupies the lower-left corner, offering another station inside the drawing of the station. The white paper between the corridors could be daylight, solid ground, or further rooms. An exploded diagram of Shibuya Station arranges disconnected floors in white space like an Escher staircase equipped with public amenities. Platforms and concourses hover above one another, linked by dense flights of stairs, sloping escalators, and blue elevator shafts. The labels descend from 3F to B5F, although height appears to be negotiated separately in each part of the image. Several places claim to be B1F. Patches labelled “ground level” occur partway through the machinery. Red accessible routes trace a meticulous course through the impossible structure, passing toilets, ticket machines, and numbered exits. The legend at the bottom explains every symbol except how to get outside.

My underlying point isn't REALLY a big philosophy argument, anyway - it's this. We are rapidly approaching an event horizon where philosophy arguments are going to be of real consequence and not dusty thought experiments. But I don't know what the actual resolution of the philosophical puzzles is.
