I’ll also add that most of the heat should be directed at USA Today, but the journalists who participated in this breach of ethics also made a choice. Organizations are made up of people. We can’t absolve the people who do harm on the behalf of an organization.

A lot of people in the comments are mentioning that USA Today is owned by Gannett. One of my big concerns is that *every* Gannett-owned newsroom might have access to my interview now. I will never interview with any of them again.

As an expert on sexual violence, I have to add that these ethical violations are a nightmare for interviews on sensitive subjects. I would never recommend ANY survivor goes public with their story at an outlet that would do this to them.

I can’t imagine any off the record remarks were removed from the audio recording before it was shared—including before it was potentially uploaded into an AI service.

While digging around their website, I found their ethics policy—including a section on AI-generated content. I suspect that’s a part of what happened here. And I’m upset about that too! I did NOT speak to a journalist with the assumption that my interview would be funneled into producing AI slop.

As an update for anyone who isn’t digging through the comments: I found more articles by USA Today journalists I’ve never met. There are THREE that used quotes from my interview recording—including many quotes that were never publicly published anywhere else.

And still, all of it could have been avoided if USA Today respected the experts they interview. They could have been one of the only publications to get it right *from the beginning* by platforming the concerns that sexual violence researchers had as soon as we saw the DA's statement.

After I posted this thread, I got an email from an editor indicating the story had been updated. They removed my quote and added new text about the developments in the case. I don't know if they ever would have done that without pressure, but it's something.

The primary objective of journalism is supposed to be telling the truth. It is a DECISION on the part of USA Today to know that new details have emerged about this case and to refuse to update an old story that is still circulating and still shaming Jane Doe.

I'm not linking the piece because I'd like for as few people to read it as possible. I'm writing about it here because: - I want to be clear about what happened to anyone who saw that article and felt betrayed to see me associated with it. - These are bad decisions that deserve public shame.

Once I found out about it, I contacted the reporter and asked him to retract the piece--or at minimum add an editor's note acknowledging the NYT reporting about how Jane Doe did NOT tell police that she consented to her rape. Thus far, the publication has refused to do so.

Ironically, my original interview with the journalist I spoke with was primarily about how "inconsistencies" can come from gender bias in investigatory processes and then be blamed on survivors. It was the inspiration for this thread--but none of these points made it into any USA Today article:

I'm the token expert voice saying that inconsistencies in victim's narratives are common in an otherwise brutally bad piece of journalism full of tropes about how not to report on sexual assault.

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

It explains why it’s so hard to even have a discussion on the issue. In musical terms, one side is classical, the other is free jazz. There is virtually no common denominator grounding a discourse other than the subject of the discourse itself.

Zionist becomes an epithet. Genocide becomes an accusation without a legal standard. Their meanings are fluid, floating freely from context to context. There are no facts. There is no neutral position, nor is there neutral language. And debate becomes impossible.

The unfortunate result is that these words have become unmoored their meanings. So when we (Jews/Israelis/Zionists) try to explain why they’re wrong about crucial foundational concepts, it falls on deaf ears.

Where things get murky is in the meaning of those words. Antizionists are less concerned with the objective meaning of words than they are about the power contained within them. Thus they can bandy about the word genocide as shorthand for whatever they want to say about Israel, Zionists or Jews.

For antizionists, it’s important that you use the words and say the slogans. They will welcome or ostracize you based on whether or not you recite their prescribed words.

Been thinking about the use of words by the Palestine movement/antizionists. All of us agree that words are important, but how we use those words is fundamentally different.

See, like, we have examples of *blatant* antisemitism and the best any of the defenders on the left can do is shrug their shoulders and go "eh, well, not much I can do about *that* one, seems pretty understandable". This is an indictment of the left, tbh.

I'm so fucking tired of people claiming "the antisemitism on the left is just coming from random anonymous nobodies online, it's not Real People in Real Life". It *is* Real People in Real Life, it's *well-known people*, and it's *everywhere* now. Either stand up to it or let the left be infected.

The reason they're doing that is because of a long history of arguing with liberals online in the oughts and tens re: repressive anti-American governments committing outright genocide (and in some cases, America intervening against said genocide), and now they want their own cudgel to play with.

The uncomfortable reality is that the Israel/Gaza war just so happened to feature opposing belligerents who, though they are not equally matched in standard warfare, are among the global leaders in information warfare. Almost certainly moreso than in any conflict since the fall of the USSR.

The Ukraine activists nearly always pushed people to donate to large organizations, or to vetted local civil society organizations. It's easier to organize. It was pretty rare to see "donate to this gofundme for my friend," because much of that was agitprop rather than so-called "mutual aid."
