Sometimes I have an intrusive thought hoping for The One Horrible Disaster to happen in the hopes it will snap people to their senses. This is stupid of me because if the pandemic and insurrection have taught us anything, it is that people do not learn from horrible disasters. People just die.

thousands of law enforcement agencies have looked at what ICE has been doing and said "sign us up." simply ending 287g is not an adequate response. this should be a sign that law enforcement is as culpable as ICE and DHS. abolishing those federal agencies will not be enough.

RIP Stars and Stripes S&S is an example of real democracy. We're confident enough to allow a free press inside our own military and let the chips fall where they may. Doesn't mean their coverage is always perfect, but it's always credibly independent. Ending that is a sign of democratic weakness.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

Anyone who uses AI in their work (or requires it of their employees) is not only benefiting from the theft and exploitation used to create it, they are contributing to the alienation of labour and the immiseration of the very people whose work went in to training the AI in the first place.

And while we're on the subject: there's no ethical use of a product brought to market through unethical means. It doesn't matter whether the product is "AI" or chocolate or diamonds. Most generative "AI" was knowingly developed through massive theft from creatives; we have the emails admitting this.
