I was on a plane last month the day after some primaries, and the guy behind me was a political consultant, talking with the candidate about how negative she wanted to go and when. He said, "decide how negative you're willing to go, and then we'll just go straight there." Don't know party, but. . .

The question is whether Paxton is uncoachable or if the people around him hate him so much they just say, "here's yer talking points boss--you got this."

Do we really need social workers? Or teachers' aides? Are these actually worthwhile human endeavors? (since this is bsky, please be assured that's sarcasm) Y'know, if we didn't want people in low-paid but socially valuable professions to have student loans, perhaps there are alternatives?

Incompetence or provocation? I suspect the latter--daring someone to do something about it, and if nobody does, precedent!

It’s not often an economics conference keynote makes me laugh out loud.
So that's the strategic choice, but at some level, eventually, we do need to try to understand what's driving this. And that's where, if I can make a plea, I do think we need to bring the international relations people into these discussions. Yeah, they don't do quantitative models. They have an annoying addiction to 2 x 2 matrices, but they are smart. They've thought about it a lot and have actually picked up some aspects of international interdependence that I think economists have neglected.

In 1994 Republican House member from Texas challenged the SECDEF over creating an Army-run vaccine research and production facility. The representative was upset that DoD was moving too slowly and still considering a private sector option. Oh, how times have changed.

My dad never went to kindergarten because he had polio and was bed ridden most of the year. At least 2 other children on his block died from the disease itself or complications. My mom, just a couple years younger, has no memory of anyone getting polio, because there was a vaccine.

Something that's left me mad re: birthright citizenship revisionists/racists is that in this country we are not supposed to presume things based on skin color or parental identity, and folks who are enjoying life in this country- minding their own business- should be left the hell alone accordingly.

And yet this guy will lecture me on my lack of Christian faith. His generation of evangelicals can't understand why so many young people fall away or are not interested in the church. This is it, buddy. And yes, they're finding new appeal for young men--that's. . .not actually a good sign.

This is one of several reasons I don't like creating "self-funding" government entities or the illusion of self-funded govt entities (e.g. Social Security "accounts"). They blur the point below, which is that it's all one big pot of appropriatable money.

as someone who has read far too much military history i think this is as wrong as can be. america did not send warriors to win world war two. we sent shopkeepers, and farmers, and accountants, and millions of ordinary people who did not dream of glory and death. and we won.

Skanska has been awarded a $114 million contract to rehabilitate the 1-395 northbound bridge over the Potomac River, with construction expected to begin in early 2027. The two-year project will upgrade the 1950 bridge, convert its bascule span to a fixed span and extend its service life by an estimated 75 years.

At great grandmother's funeral her "niece" was listed as her daughter. She had a child around 16 who was adopted by her sister then got pregnant again ~ a year later, at which point the bishop called in my great-grandfather and told him God was calling him on a mission to rescue a fallen girl.

Like so many conspiracy theories, it fails the "explain why they would want to do this" test. It makes no sense, but people just desperately want to believe a) McConnell is dead and b) there's some nefarious plot. He's 84 and frail. That's the story.
