One of my favorite anachronistic things I started doing is reciting poems to my kiddo when I tuck them in. It keeps your mind sharp, and it's very funny when they walk around mumbling bits of verse.

🚨 Latest from the border wall blockade: tree sit is still up, one land defender is locked down to machinery, Border Patrol has wrapped a Mylar blanket around them and is running the truck and pumping the blanket full of exhaust to try to gas them out, potentially killing them.

There's been a fair amount of commentary on how social media has become less fun, less interesting, etc. And there's a ton on how it's become more passive—"everything is TV". But I haven't seen much on these things tie together? And I think they clearly do. reason.com/2026/10/05/t...

You know, I'm something of a political scientist myself thedispatch.com/article/trum...
. While Trump has shown no qualms about blending public policy with private profit, I think it’s a stretch to accuse him of this specifically without evidence. Sometimes the most realistic explanation is much simpler. C.J. Ciaramella posited what became known as the “my boxes” theory—Trump wanted to keep the material because he viewed the documents as his own cool souvenirs, and didn’t feel the need to explain it to anyone. We can see this same decision-making playing out in the second Trump admin, in matters of structures or strategies—be it “my monuments,” “my tariffs,” or “my Iran war.” Trump wants it because he wants it.

Latest: I wrote about internal ICE reviews---now deleted from ICE's website---revealing new details medical neglect in detention centers. The reports contradict DHS' public statements both generally and specifically about in-custody deaths reason.com/2026/10/01/i...
According to the internal report on Blaise's death, "A mortality review committee (MRC) determined BTC did not provide Ms. BLAISE medical care within the safe limits of practice."

The MRC found that, after Blaise collapsed, "1) BTC health staff deviated from basic life support (BLS) protocols; 2) Health staff failed to initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), despite Ms. BLAISE's pulselessness; and 3) Health staff did not include Ms. BLAISE's vital signs with their documentation of the emergency response."

The mortality report contradicts the public report ICE published on Blaise's death, which claimed that staff called for emergency medical services (EMS) and "immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation" and "continued providing CPR until EMS personnel arrived."

great look for the Supreme Court's conservative majority to lift the stay blocking Pike's execution, only for Tennessee to botch it. Of course, they're just going to be extra crabby next time a death penalty appeal cites it in a challenge to lethal injection protocols.

I mean, yeah, the book and mail bans are a two-bird-one-stone thing for prisons, because they're "doing something" about contraband and also further degrading incarcerated people. Three birds, actually, because mail and books are replaced with third-party tablets and kiosks they can monetize.

I've been conflicted about my ADHD diagnosis my whole life, but one thing I'm 100 percent confident of is that no kid should be made to feel stupid and lazy for it. If more people could feel how hard it is for children to deal with that, just for one second, it would break their hearts.

What a brutal fact-finding - Texas prisons have tried harder to get decent conditions for hens than for inmates.
The lack of temperature controls in the majority of TDCJ’s inmate housing stands in
contrast to the agency’s approach to other areas of its operations—including in parts of its
agricultural program. For example, TDCJ has spent millions of dollars to ensure that poultry are
housed in safe temperatures. 174 TDCJ’s documentation specifies that “[t]he regulation of air-flow
within a poultry house is of great importance because excessive moisture and heat buildup can
adversely affect the overall productivity of a laying flock” and that “great care must be taken to
maintain a comfortable environment for the flock,” with the optimal temperature range for laying
hens being 45 degrees to 75 degrees.175 These protections do not exist in inmate housing facilities.
